Dean of Nursing Education Programs


The Dean of Nursing Education Programs is responsible for providing leadership in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing program. At the same time, the Dean must facilitate responsiveness by the program to the needs of the community and the health care system as well as foster within the program an organizational culture that supports collegiality, personal well-being, and professional development of students, faculty, and staff. The Dean also serves as the representative of the program to the College administration, regulatory and accreditation bodies, Education Affiliates Nursing Division, the local advisory committee, and to other internal and external constituencies. The position reports to the President of the College.

  • Works effectively as part of the overall faculty and administrative teams to include interpersonal relations, collaborating with faculty members to meet student needs, and responding to requests from executive management.

Organization Stewardship


  • Establishes and implements written policies in cooperation with the faculty, and meets the standards of the applicable Colorado State Board of Nursing and any accrediting agencies.
  • Submits to the Colorado State Board of Nursing and other regulating and accrediting agencies all required reports and self-study documents, including reports of program or curriculum changes, promptly in accordance with regulations.
  • Assures quality and effectiveness of programs to meet the needs of the community.
  • Plans, implements, and maintains minutes for regular meetings of the faculty and the various committees to facilitate communication and to plan, implement, and evaluate curricula, policies, procedures and programs.
  • Maintains a current file of written agreements with all cooperating agencies and preceptors.
  • Participates in liaison activities with government, civic, labor, and private organizations in the community to promote community understanding and support of nursing education programs.
  • Participates as appropriate on college committees and task forces.
  • Participates in the development of an approved budget and manages expenditures within the guidelines of that budget.
  • Establishes and implements policies for admission of students to the program, readmission and advanced standing, progression in the program, and program completion in collaboration with the faculty and college staff.
  • Assures that program and HLC accreditation and institutional standards are met or exceeded.

Program Development and Management

  • Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises curriculum for the nursing program in cooperation with the faculty and within the standards of the applicable Colorado Board of Nursing and any other accrediting agencies.
  • The Dean of Nursing Education Programs is responsible for academic management of distance education (online) programs and courses. Provide guidance and support to distance education students, programs, faculty, and staff in keeping with the college’s regulatory and accreditation guidelines to ensure effectiveness and continuous improvement of distance education at the College.
  • Establishes and updates as needed, a comprehensive, written systematic plan of evaluation for the nursing programs that includes data collection from faculty, instructional personnel, students, graduates, and employers of graduates.
  • Reviews and recommends requests for materials, equipment and repairs, alterations, or any purchases of labor, materials, supplies or services for the programs.
  • Provides appropriate certification to the Colorado Board of Nursing for students who complete program requirements and are recommended for NCLEX RN Exam.
  • Determines the faculty-student ratio for clinical experiences in accordance with the regulations of the applicable Colorado Board of Nursing in collaboration with nursing faculty and clinical agency administrators.
  • Assists in developing marketing communications for the programs and in student recruitment activities.
  • Assures that accreditation and institutional standards are met or exceeded.

Faculty/Student Development and Management

  • Recruits and interviews potential faculty and makes recommendations for appointment, promotion, retention, or termination as appropriate.
  • Evaluates faculty by conducting classroom observations, provides mentoring and completes performance evaluations in accordance with policies of the college and the standards of applicable regulatory bodies.
  • Develops and implements orientation procedures and in-service education for faculty.
  • Counsels students and faculty; problem solves and facilitates with individuals/groups in the interest of student and program success.
  • Assigns administrative duties and direction to faculty as necessary based on qualifications and experience.

Professional Development Plan

  • Attends workshops and relevant continuing education aimed at earning the necessary CEU’s for license requirements (as applicable for the Dean’s active RN license) and professional growth.
  • Demonstrates professional involvement and leadership through participation in professional organizations, presentations, publications, etc.
  • Completes College annual Faculty Development Plan.

REQUIREMENTS:


  • Current active unencumbered licensure as a registered nurse or APRN in State of Colorado
  • Graduate of an approved professional nursing education program
  • Master’s degree in nursing as well as doctoral degree in nursing or terminal degree.
  • At least five years practice experience as a Registered Nurse, with at least two as a full time faculty member in a BSN or higher degree nursing education program.
  • Minimum of two (2) year successful experience in an administrative or management role.
  • Must meet or exceed all standards for the Director of Nursing Education Program (DNEP) position as outlined by the Colorado State Board of Nursing and appropriate accrediting bodies.
  • Competent in personal computer applications: word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email.
  • Excellent written, oral communication and analytical skills.
  • Ability to serve as a positive, supportive, and enthusiastic role model.
  • Successful completion of criminal background check, drug screening, appropriate immunizations and CPR and HIPAA certification.

Physical and Mental Requirements


The Dean must be able to use a personal computer and other office equipment and be able to work in an environment that can be fast-paced and stressful at times. This position requires physical mobility throughout the facility. To perform the essential competencies and responsibilities of the position, the Dean may also be required to: sit, bend, kneel, reach, stand for long periods, walk, talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate computers and/or audiovisual equipment. The Dean may also occasionally be required to lift, push, pull, carry, or support patients or materials.
