A Carnegie R2 institution and the state of New Jersey’s first officially designated Urban Research University, Kean embraces an anchor institution mission, leveraging its educational and scholarly programs to foster the economic, social, cultural, and physical well-being of communities throughout the state, the nation, and around the world. Working closely with community partners, Kean crafts outstanding degree and non-degree programs for graduate and undergraduate learners, addresses the needs of the governmental, business, health care, and nonprofit sectors, and accelerates student success. Kean launched a new campus, Kean Jersey City on July 1, 2026, becoming the second largest university system in the state and extending our geographic presence to New Jersey’s largest population center. Kean also operates a joint Sino-US campus, Wenzhou Kean University, in Zhejiang Province in the People’s Republic of China.

Kean’s College of Education is focused on preparing teachers and other education professionals for work in diverse educational settings. The College offers undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs through departments including: Bilingual Education, TESOL and World Languages; Early Childhood Education; Educational Leadership and Secondary Education; Elementary and PE/Health Education; and Special Education and Literacy. The College also includes infrastructure to support the professional preparation of educators, with an Office of Teacher Certification and Alternate Route Programs and an Office of Student Placement and Clinical Experiences.
