Systems Administrator - Database Operations

Zelis is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Systems Administrator - Database Operations to monitor and optimize the performance of our database systems. This role focuses on query tuning, resource management, and the investigation of production database issues, ensuring database health and reliability. While the role does not involve database maintenance, it requires close collaboration with the enterprise infrastructure team, engineering, and production support teams. The ideal candidate will have a strong analytical mindset and the ability to contribute to major incident management efforts when needed.

What You'll Do:

Database ​Performance Optimization:

• Monitor and tune database queries to ensure optimal performance and resource utilization.

• Analyze and resolve query performance issues, collaborating with engineering and production teams to identify root causes.

• Conduct regular performance evaluations to proactively identify potential bottlenecks.

Incident Investigation and Support:

• Serve as the primary point of contact for investigating and resolving production database-related issues.

• Participate in major incident management (MIM) processes, providing timely support and resolution strategies.

• Collaborate with engineering and production teams to minimize downtime and ensure data integrity.

Collaboration and Communication:

• Work closely with the enterprise infrastructure team to ensure alignment on database maintenance and infrastructure practices.

• Partner with engineering teams to provide insights and recommendations for improving database performance in development workflows.

• Ensure dedicated time and availability for both engineering and production support needs.

Monitoring and Reporting:

• Develop and maintain monitoring tools to track database health, query performance, and resource usage.

• Generate reports and provide insights to stakeholders regarding database performance trends and incident resolutions.

What You'll Bring to Zelis:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

• 5+ years of experience in database performance tuning, query optimization, or a related role.

• Hands-on experience working with relational and non-relational databases (e.g., SQL Server).

• Expertise in SQL query optimization and performance tuning.

• Familiarity with database monitoring tools and techniques.

• Understanding of production database workflows and incident management practices.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical insights to diverse stakeholders.

• Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams and manage competing priorities.

• Experience working in production support or major incident management environments.

• Knowledge of cloud-based database services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database).

• Familiarity with scripting languages (e.g., Python, Shell) for automation and reporting.
