The Database Management Specialist performs activities related to the day-to-day administration and maintenance of transactional databases, ensuring that the databases are available, performing properly, and safe. Performs installations, upgrades and patching, backup and recovery, performance tuning, security, monitoring, and configuration.

Either US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required for this role. In addition, the selected applicant must submit to a government background investigation and be favorably adjudicated before their first day.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure the availability, performance monitoring and tuning, maintenance, upgrade operations, backup/recovery operations, data migration/loads, and SQL and PL/SQL coding in support of custom application development and database operations on both on-premises databases and cloud database service at USDA DISC
  • Directs the monitoring, administering, and implementing performance on database systems as well as database performance optimization, developing/changing database indices, redesigning database structure and reloading data into a database
  • Responsible for the performance, integrity, and security of managed databases
  • Assists in the planning and development of databases, as well as troubleshooting issues on behalf of both internal users and external clients
  • Maintains the integrity, security and availability of multiple databases
  • Administers, maintains, develops and implements policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the database
  • Performs database and software life-cycle activities to ensure the highest level of system performance and availability and compliance with business requirements
  • Performs PostgreSql, MongoDB database and application server administration
  • Organizes and formats data for efficient query and storage processes
  • Coordinate and develop database backup, storage, and replication schemes across the customers' enterprise. Develop policies and procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of the database(s)
  • Adhere to the NIST's Cybersecurity Framework standards to emphasize security in the database design and creation process

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • A minimum of 7 years of database administration experience
  • Experience and expertise working with on-premises and AWS Cloud-based relational and non-relational databases
  • Knowledge of Real Applications Clusters, Oracle Advanced Security, Oracle Wallet, Data Guard, Flashback technology, Recovery Manager, and Oracle Enterprise Manager
  • Familiar with NIST's Risk Management Framework
  • 5+ years experience in MySQL, Oracle 19c, Oracle Forms database and application server administration
  • Excellent communication skills both written and oral
  • Ability to contribute quickly to the project
  • Ability to prioritize and organize efforts in a fast-paced environment
  • Independent problem-solving skills, strong analytical abilities, creativity, and a customer service-orientated personality

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Oracle Database Administration Certified Professional (12c or higher)

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline; four (4) years of experience may be substituted instead of a degree

Internal title/grade: Database Administrator, Grade 6

Salary Range: $93,400 - $112,000

All individuals being hired to work for TCG must submit to, and successfully pass, a pre-employment background investigation prior to reporting for their first day of work. The pre-employment background investigation will include verification of employment and education, as well as, a criminal and DMV check.

Additional documentation and background checks will also be required for positions that require clearance from the Federal government.
