Position OverviewThe Database Architect will architect, implement, manage, and optimize scalable, high-performance, and secure database solutions using AWS database and data processing services and Snowflake. The role includes database administration, SQL development, automation and scripting, security and compliance, troubleshooting, and support for other developers.
Key ResponsibilitiesAWS Database Architecture and Operations- Utilize AWS database and data processing services, including Amazon RDS, AuroraDB, DynamoDB, Redshift, ElastiCache, EMR, and Neptune.
- Architect scalable, high-performance, and secure database solutions.
- Configure, launch, and manage EMR clusters, optimizing for performance and cost and integrating with various data sources.
- Integrate databases with AWS services such as Lambda, S3, EC2, and Glue.
- Troubleshoot AWS-related issues and incidents.
- Apply AWS security best practices, including IAM, encryption, VPC, and security groups, and comply with data storage requirements.
- Design backup, disaster recovery, high availability, and failover solutions, including Multi-AZ and read replicas.
- Ensure compliance with SSA security, privacy, and data management policies.
- Design, implement, and manage virtual data warehouses in Snowflake.
- Write complex SQL queries for data analysis, transformation, and reporting.
- Optimize queries, manage caching and clustering, and leverage auto-scaling to handle workloads.
- Brief management, customers, teams, and vendors using written and oral communication appropriate to the audience's technical level.
- Provide guidance and support to junior- and mid-level developers.
- Perform all other duties as assigned or directed.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field. A master's or doctorate degree may substitute for required experience. [Required]
- 7+ years of experience as a Database Architect. [Required]
- Experience with AWS database and data processing services, including Amazon RDS, AuroraDB, DynamoDB, Redshift, ElastiCache, EMR, and Neptune. [Required]
- Experience configuring, launching, and managing EMR clusters, optimizing for performance and cost, and integrating with various data sources. [Required]
- Experience designing backup, disaster recovery, high availability, and failover solutions, including Multi-AZ and read replicas. [Required]
- Experience designing, implementing, and managing virtual data warehouses in Snowflake, including an understanding of micro-partitions. [Required]
- Experience with Snowflake schema design, normalization, and building efficient data structures. [Required]
- Experience with data ingestion, transformation, and loading using Snowflake features and integration tools. [Required]
- Experience integrating Snowflake with BI tools such as Tableau and Power BI and using Python for data pipelines and machine learning applications. [Required]
- Knowledge of AWS security best practices, including IAM, encryption, VPC, and security groups, and compliance requirements for data storage. [Required]
- Strong troubleshooting skills for AWS-related issues and incidents. [Required]
- Skilled in optimizing queries, managing caching and clustering, and leveraging auto-scaling to handle workloads. [Required]
- Proficiency in automation and scripting using CloudFormation, Terraform, AWS CLI, Python, Bash, and PowerShell for database and workflow management. [Required]
- Skilled in relational and NoSQL database management, data modeling, normalization, and schema design. [Required]
- Advanced skills in writing complex SQL queries for data analysis, transformation, and reporting. [Required]
- Ability to architect scalable, high-performance, and secure database solutions, including query optimization, indexing, caching, and performance tuning using AWS tools. [Required]
- Experience securing AWS clusters, managing IAM roles, implementing encryption, and monitoring jobs using AWS tools such as CloudWatch and CloudTrail. [Required]
- Knowledge of Snowflake role-based access control, data encryption, and security best practices. [Required]
- Selected candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a public trust clearance. [Required]
- Selected candidate must be willing to work on-site in Woodlawn, MD, five days a week. [Required]
- Experience identifying requirements, researching options, designing, and implementing solutions at a leadership level on project work.
- Experience scripting in a Linux environment to automate ETL solutions and data migration jobs.
- Prior experience working in a federal agency or public sector environment.
- Understanding and application of quality techniques and practices, including automated unit testing, Test Driven Design/Development, performance analysis, and continuous integration.
- Ability to assist with architectural tactical thinking, information solutions, and road maps to drive architectural recommendations.
