Role purposeThe key purpose of the Database Administrator role is to manage, maintain, and secure organisational databases to ensure their performance, availability, and integrity. This role involves designing and implementing reliable and scalable relational and non-relational databases, monitoring and troubleshooting performance issues, and ensuring compliance with relevant security standards. Responsibilities include planning and development of database systems, formalising backup processes, managing user access, and implementing updates to optimise system efficiency. The Database Administrator collaborates with other IT teams and stakeholders to support database-related activities and ensure seamless information flow across the organisation.Key Accountabilities
Database Management
- Install, configure, and maintain database systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Monitor database performance, implement changes, and apply new patches and versions when required.
- Ensure data integrity and security by implementing appropriate measures and controls.
- Implement and maintains database security measures to protect sensitive data.
Data Backup & Recovery
- Develop and implement data backup and recovery plans to protect against data loss.
- Perform regular backups and test recovery procedures to ensure data can be restored in case of failure.
Performance Tuning & Optimisation
- Monitor and analyse database performance, identifying and resolving issues to ensure optimal performance.
- Implement performance tuning and optimisation techniques to improve database efficiency.
Security Management
- Implement and maintain database security measures to protect sensitive data.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry regulations and security standards.
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with other platform engineers, application engineers and other IT teams to support database-related activities.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance for database issues.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation of database configurations, processes, and procedures.
- Generate reports on database performance, usage, and security as required.
Innovation & Emerging Technologies
- Stay abreast of emerging database technologies and industry trends.
- Identify opportunities to leverage new technologies to enhance database management and performance.

Experience & Capabilities
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE (what you have done)
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or similar.
- Over 5 years of experience in database administration.
- Experience with database management systems such as SQL Server, Oracle, Postgre, MySQL, NoSQL and other industry leading RDBMS platforms.
CRITICAL KNOWLEDGE (what you need to know)
- Knowledge of database security measures and industry regulations.
- Understanding of data backup, recovery, and performance tuning techniques.
- Proficient in database management systems, SQL, and relevant database tools.
- Strong understanding of database security, backup, and recovery processes.
CAPABILITIES (what you can do)
- Exceptional verbal, written, visual, and negotiation skills, effectively engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
- Good report writing and presentation skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve database issues.
