Database Administrator III

SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision, the Database Administrator III designs, configures, and manages databases to ensure the integrity, security, and accessibility of data. This role installs, administers, and provides problem-resolution support for system software and third-party productivity tools. May act as a lead or mentor to lower-level employees.

JOB DUTIES

  • Designs, plans, and implements most aspects of database management and may begin to specialize in and develop a higher level of expertise in one aspect of database management such as data administration, web connectivity, physical structure, logical design, SQL, and SQL applications or overall architecture and database analysis.
  • Communicates with other business groups to evaluate and recommend the purchase and utilization of software products to assist in the management of data.
  • Configures database parameters and defines data repository requirements, data dictionaries, and warehousing requirements.
  • Defines standards for physical data storage, maintenance, access and security administration.
  • Assists the appropriate team(s) with the acquisition, installation, network configuration, deployment, and maintenance of database systems.
  • Ensures the proper scheduling of database back-up tasks and the completion of scheduled tasks.
  • Maintains internally developed and/or third-party database administration software.
  • Measures DMBS performance and modifies system-level configuration to optimize performance with little to no oversight.
  • Develops, documents, implements, and maintains disaster recovery procedures.
  • Keeps abreast of the latest technical developments and trends in database systems support, management, administration, and performance.
  • Monitors and tunes systems to ensure good performance, reliability, and availability at the lowest possible cost.
  • Develops and/or maintains internally developed database administration software.
  • Identifies and documents major systems support processes.
  • Evaluates, recommends and cost-justifies systems software solutions.
  • Acts as lead/mentor to other employees in the department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Typically requires a bachelor's degree and five (5) or more years of related experience or an equivalent combination.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Possesses and applies broad knowledge of database principles and practices.
  • Broad knowledge of database definition, design, and configuration.
  • Strong technical problem-solving skills and understanding of relational model principles.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while balancing multiple priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to document, track and monitor technical issues to ensure timely resolution.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Experience with Oracle, Db2, PostgreSQL and CloudSQL.
  • Knowledge of Linux, Windows Server, Storage, Network and Security.
  • Understanding of high availability and disaster recovery configurations.
  • Knowledge derived from experiences with more complex database systems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Required to participate in 24 x 7 on-call rotation.
