Position Summary:

The Senior Staff Scientist is part of the Clinical Research Function at Dexcom and is responsible for ensuring the right physiological, behavioral, and clinical study metrics and designs are identified, designed to, and validated against for research and development of Dexcom's existing, future and competing health sensing products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and execution of feasibility studies with clinical, regulatory, and UX teams for new and existing health sensing technology
  • Participate in technical scouting for innovation and technology opportunities as it pertains to pre-clinical and clinical studies
  • As necessary build new measurement and analysis capabilities related to health sensing products and features for inclusion in pre-clinical and clinical studies
  • When appropriate, lead multi-disciplinary teams to identify, quantify, and drive down risks and barriers associated with next generation technologies and system architectures
  • Participate in the strategy and development of IP and publications to support efforts derived from technology development projects
  • Partner with R&D engineering leads and marketing on product ideation and design



Required Qualifications:

  • Previous direct involvement in Medical Device product and/or technology development
  • Advanced degree in biological or chemical sciences with significant experience in pre clinical and clinical study design
  • Track record of and ability to run self-directed projects, maintain timelines, transfer technology and execute projects in an early-stage technical environment
  • Proven ability to organize, analyze, and interpret data to generate insights and conclusions
  • Proven ability to deal with ambiguity/uncertainty and a willingness to try new/challenging things
  • Proven ability to work hands-on and independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Products



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in a start-up or early-stage environment
  • Specific SME knowledge in one or more of the following technology spaces: wearables, needles/micro-needles, patch/adhesives, batteries, sealing technologies, flexible circuits, electronics packages, sensor technologies.



Travel Required:

  • Up to 25%



Functional Description

Initiates, directs and executes all pre-clinical scientific research and/or development strategies in research and/or development. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Plans and executes laboratory research. Demonstrates appropriate technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories. Makes major contributions to scientific literature and conferences. May act as spokesperson on corporate research and development and advise top management. May participate in development of patent applications. Interfaces with various departments and serves as internal consultant.

Functional/Business Knowledge

  • Possesses expert knowledge of leading technical areas.
  • May be externally recognized as an expert in technical field.

  • High level of understanding of solving unique problems where analysis requires an in-depth evaluation and may impact future concepts or technologies.



Judgement

  • Exercises independent judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
  • Demonstrates ability to discover and identify processes, novel science and technology which lead to increased productivity and results.



Experience and Education

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree in a technical discipline, and a minimum of 13+ years related experience or a Masters degree and 8+ years equivalent industry experience of a PhD and 5+ years of experience.



Workplace Type

  • The Workplace Type for this role is Assigned Desk. Based on the nature of your role you will have an assigned desk or office located at a Dexcom site and should plan to be onsite approximately 4-5 days per week.
