Programs & Alternative Risk innovation is focused on creating a pipeline of opportunities for ESS by exploring and developing new growth initiatives that leverage new and existing distribution models as well as our partnerships both inside and outside Nationwide. We are also focused on creating market and industry current and future views for business partners to make better decisions on future product offerings and market impacts on current product sets.

As a member of the Programs & Alternative Risks innovation team you will have two primary activities; innovation and competitive and market intel. From an innovation perspective, you will assist with the opportunity assessments, balancing desirability, feasibility and viability. You will support the development of recommendations regarding features, scope, go to market, plans and design features. You will partner with select enterprise partners including Underwriting, Marketing, legal, technology, compliance, Product and Finance.

From a market and competitor intel perspective, collect, create and communicate data and recommendations by performing statistical analysis monitoring the company's competitive position, maintaining profiles of key competitors and targeted product and service sectors. You will also support management in keeping a pulse on industry movement and activities and proactively stay abreast of key trends within insurance, financial services, startup's, technology companies with a focus on innovation and market and competitor intel.

The role will work collaborate with customers, partners, vendors, leaders and staff, Product, Finance, legal, Marketing, P&C and Enterprise Innovation, Strategy, Enterprise Ventures as well as other groups.

Key Responsibilities

  • Retrieves and manipulates data, responsible for suitability and accuracy of data
  • Updates competitive intelligence tools and reports: Serves as subject matter expert for Competitive intelligence tools and reports
  • May work on projects with little-to-no direction and be expected to develop project plans, timelines, deliverables etc.
  • May be expected to collaborate or lead Competitive Intelligence Projects
  • Participate in ad-hoc analysis applying data mining techniques to discover new relationships in the data
  • Communicates frequently and clearly with other teams and leaders
  • Act as a liaison in the development of standardization of innovation metrics
  • Supports the ongoing effective operations of innovation portfolio management and metrics
  • Perform other related duties as assigned


The compensation range for this role is E3.

This role can be filled at an alternate level, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate.

The ideal candidate would be located in Scottsdale, AZ, but open to other remote locations.

As a Senior Analyst, you'll provide support in all phases of the financial and operational measurement life cycle. You'll partner with internal customers in determining data and information needs and in figuring out uses of information to aid with decision making. You will interpret and examine information needs, craft ad hoc and ongoing reports and maintain internal databases for related functional information.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develops, produces and maintains ad hoc and custom reports for functional area information needs. Interprets information contained in reports as requested. Utilizes various data access tools to pull information for reports and solutions.
  • Plans and manages execution of work, participates in planning and delivers on commitments. Provides support for creating, packaging and communicating financial and operational measurement work using appropriate statistical and visual solutions and mediums for relevant insights and applicable data visualizations.
  • Retrieves data from internal and external sources and data files in order to keep internal databases current and usable. Exports information to external sources.
  • Assists with delivery of financial and operational measurement work to the appropriate area of the company as assigned.
  • Helps build and use business intelligence applications using statistical, database and/or general programming languages and tools. Assists in using technology for data management, report automation and/or ad hoc reporting for end users.
  • Applies appropriate quantitative techniques and methods to help resolve business problems.
  • Participates in special projects, teams and continuous improvement of department processes through ongoing initiatives.
  • Presents insightful recommendations, presentations, reports and documents to help with the use of the information.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Manager/Director and does not have direct reports.

Typical Skills and Experiences:

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information, business, mathematics or related field with post-graduate studies preferred.

Experience: Four years or more of related experience with data visualization tools and problem solving; working with large customer and/or prospect databases; working with product, geographic, demographic data to build understandable and relevant measures.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of business policies and procedures, customer service concepts and practices. Familiarity with business terminology, processes, regulatory and compliance issues is desired. Understanding of and working knowledge to conduct data management and extraction of data for reporting. Strong communication skills for interactions with others. Ability to understand business processes and the data produced by them. Ability to work under tight time constraints. Capable of developing distinctive and understandable data visualizations.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager's leader and Human Resources Business Partner.
