Primary Responsibilities:

  • The Optum Labs Data Strategy team is building a core capability around data management, governance and use to support enterprise goals to improve access to research quality data. For this work, the team is seeking a Sr. Principal Data Analyst to deliver quality data that can be used to drive a data strategy that supports clear and understandable data for artificial intelligence, machine learning and research
  • Combining a deep knowledge of healthcare data and a commitment to understanding the nuances in data, the Sr. Principal Data Analyst will work across the enterprise to identify and curate key data sources for use in building models. Analyses will include identifying the type data needed, availability of such data, validating the accuracy of such data, identifying the link or lack of link between the data assets and their potential impact to the models being built. As part of this role the Sr. Principal Data Analyst will be consulted by the various teams in Optum Labs as a subject matter expert (SME) of key data assets in UHG
  • Work with business and IT partners to enable new business partners into the enterprise AI platform. Identify data assets needs that match the business needs of the AI product. Enable team through the enterprise privacy, compliance, and data use process. Be the key contact to ensure smooth onboarding of large programs into the enterprise AI platform
  • Deliver data analyses to shape development and expansion of a reliable, documented, governed data assets that best suite current and potential future data needs. Examples include conducting analysis to identify new data assets in the enterprise, recognize data asset trends, potentially enriching dataset to serve specific business use cases, and assuring data quality
  • Work with business stakeholders and product managers to support data product development, including requirements gathering, specifications documentation, and data source identification. Create data product documentation including robust data dictionaries and metadata tagging
  • Work within all applicable compliance, privacy, and contractual data use requirements as applicable. Understand and follow the restrictions around use of PHI/PII data for analysis, research, and model development. Work with product and compliance teams to apply appropriate data usage rights for data used in model building and when models are deployed
  • Perform reviews of artifacts created and mentor junior data analysts. Develop runbooks for key activities to help streamline the team to be more effective. Should be a thought leader for the team
  • Coordinate with third party data partners to land and link third party data assets with internal data assets as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 7+ years of experience as a Principal Data Analyst
  • 7+ years of experience in the healthcare industry analyzing multiple data asset types (e.g., administrative claims, EMR, etc.).
  • 7+ years of experience with analytic tool such as SQL, Python, or R
  • 5+ years of experience working with healthcare data privacy, compliance, and governance requirements


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of FHIR
  • Demonstrated experience influencing with technical and business leadership through verbal and written communications
  • Detailed-oriented with solid documentation and tracking skills
  • Ability to clearly document data needs from ML model building teams and then identify key assets in the enterprise that would satisfy the data needs
  • Ability to develop deep knowledge of key data assets in the organization. Develop Subject Matter Expertise for key assets in the organization
  • Identify patterns in data needs and influence AI platforms to build pipelines to satisfy future data needs
  • Knowledge in building Data Catalogue is
  • Ability to identify data quality needs that are relevant to ML Model building teams and influencing IT teams to incorporate those data quality rules to inform ML teams about the current quality of the data they are using in their models
  • Experience creating data dictionaries and metadata tags
  • Building and maintaining data management standards

Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, or New York City Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada/New York City residents is $113,500 to $218,100. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
