What we’re looking for
Alloy is looking for a database administrator to improve the performance and monitor the health of our primary Postgres data store. We're excited by the opportunity to bring on someone with particular expertise in Postgres database administration to take ownership over maintaining, scaling, and optimizing the db. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to help the company scale out postgres (including sharding/partitioning decisions), and collaborate with engineering and infrastructure teams to tune the datastore to support different use cases.
You’ll be part of the data team and a member of the broader engineering group, working closely with backend and frontend engineers that value collaboration, flexible work arrangements, working reproducibly, testing, and software craftsmanship. What you’ll be doing
Reporting to the Director of Data, the Database Administrator will:
- Ensure healthy operation of RDS Postgres DB via standard DBA activities
- Lead and contribute to database design discussions in support of application development teams
- Own db change management and deployment process
- Review and provide high-quality input on database migrations
- Define database standards, guidelines and best practices
- Engage in periodic capacity planning and cost estimation
- Provision high quality anonymized data to lower environments
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of database features, version and technologies
On a given day, this might look like:
- reviewing a complex database migration that involves changes to a frequently used index
- analyzing frequently used queries to suggest improvements in our indexing or storage strategy
- modifying a db monitoring and alerting dashboard to get more accurate load statistics
- building a sharding strategy on a key db table that keeps latency on reads/writes for recent data low, while ensuring access to older data
What we’re looking for
- 3+ years of experience using relational databases (Postgres highly preferred)
- Minimum of 3 years experience administering databases (Postgres highly preferred)
- Minimum of 2 years of hands-on experience working on AWS
- Experience and expertise working with AWS-based relational and non-relational databases
- Solutions-oriented, hands-on, with a bias for action
- Ability to collaborate: advocate for your ideas and listen to other
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Willingness to respond to and support on-call events
