We are looking for a talented Manager of Data Science to grow and lead a new data science team here at FLYR. You will hire and build a new data science team expanding FLYR’s pricing and forecasting to new markets and capabilities.

This position is based in our San Francisco office location and reports into the Director of Data Science.

As a data science manager you will lead the development of ML models and data science work to create pricing and forecasting outputs for our SaaS product offerings. Your team will contribute to feature identification and model technology, and ensure model quality by performing data analysis and the development of model output analysis and test cases. Your team will develop productized models that will then be tuned and trained by FLYR’s professional services and Delivery staff to provide high quality pricing and forecasting specific to a customer in FLYR’s portfolio of airline and transportation industry customer base.

What will your destination look like?

  • You will build and lead a word-class data science team that can execute on FLYR’s product roadmap by delivering proven forecasting and pricing models.
  • You will collaborate with a Technical Product Owner to define the roadmap and priorities for the model development and data science work of your team.
  • You will lead your team to deliver ML-based product features on a predictable cadence and at high quality.
  • You will break down business goals around pricing and forecasting tasks into concrete tasks for your team involving data analysis, feature identification and prototyping, model development, and test suite development for model output performance and quality measurements.
  • You will organize and supervise your team’s data analysis of airline commercial datasets, in the course of the development of ML features and investigations of data quality issues that impact feature correctness and quality.
  • You will develop cross-functional relationships with other product managers and software engineering teams to understand the data and operational needs of your teams’ ML models and define the data and infrastructure needs needed to put models into production. 
  • Your team will identify data quality and semantics requirements for the teams’s ML models and contribute to the evolution of the data warehouse needed to support new ML-based product features.
  • You will manage a team of 4-6 data scientists as direct reports.
  • As a people manager, you will provide technical mentorship and training to your reports and promote success in their career path at FLYR. 
  • As a technical manager, you will define and roll out processes to standardize work done by data scientists within your team, and contribute to process definition and improvements within the larger FLYR Data Science Group.
  • You will ensure your team keeps a cadence of standups, sprint planning, and end of sprint reviews. 
  • You will clearly communicate status, blockers, risk and dependencies to peer managers and executive stakeholders.

What can you bring on this trip?

  • Past experience hiring data scientists
  • Managed data scientists that built ML models as part of a product or service offering. 
  • Able to evaluate the quality of data science outputs.
  • Strong knowledge of and confidence in leading data analysis. Knowledge of how to communicate and present results of data analysis to multiple stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of SQL and confidence in wrangling all types of data in SQL.
  • Great at project management of data science work.
  • Quantitative educational background (Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Economics, or other related fields).
  • Managers at FLYR are expected to be strong communicators and have experience collaborating and influencing across multiple teams and external partners.
  • Managers at FLYR are expected to have experience in mentoring and coaching, growing the engineering-excellence culture, and influencing the larger data science and engineering organizations.

  • Initial Screen - Active candidates are screened against the criteria listed above
  • Introductory Call - A FLYR team member will reach out for an initial call to learn more about each other.
  • Follow-up Call - A hiring manager at FLYR will have a follow-up, in-depth conversation with candidates
  • Technical Assignment - A technical assignment utilizing necessary skills listed above provided on a take-home basis.
  • Onsite/Virtual Onsite - A series of meetings with the hiring team/team members to finalize our evaluation of candidates, assessing leadership, project management, and technical skills.
