Description

The Southern Company Gas EDGE Organization's objectives are:

  • To enhance the overall value of the company with the implementation and adoption of Data Driven Decision Support through:
  • Leadership of an enterprise strategic data governance process
  • Leadership of an enterprise strategic data management team
  • Governance of the production of high quality, immutable data (Golden Records) on which critical decision support platforms can rely - Strategic Data
  • Governance of the strategic intelligence logic and platforms that produce all decision support information for the business
  • Driving the evolution and improvement of corporate decision making through new methods, technologies, logic, and concepts
  • To establish and govern Strategic Data as a Corporate Asset across the enterprise by
  • Facilitating organizational alignment with a data and information driven decision-making culture
  • Establishing and Maintaining Sponsorship and Support at all organizational levels
  • Implementation of long-term training and implementation programs for data and information literacy
  • To implement a clean, clear source of data on which future generations of AI can build new insights for the Enterprise and provide Strategic Decision Support Counsel to the Leadership of the Company

The Data Architect will work with stakeholders - both business and technology organization teams to gather functional and non-functional requirements, derive data requirements, define and develop data logical and physical data models and implement them for Gas data assets. This position will collaborate and facilitate data governance processes for full life cycle management of data including creating and maintaining data catalog. This position will also assist the business on the development, building, training and operation of machine learning models. When these models are ready to be automated, this position will work with Technology Organization (TO) to follow our operational standards to design and develop sustainable long-term solutions. The Data Architect role will define and enforce standards and best practices for data entities. The Data Architect role will work closely with other Architects, Data Owners, Data Stewards, Product Owners, Data Engineers, BI Developers, and Infrastructure teams to implement data solutions with optimized performance, plan for capacity needs and secure storage and use of data.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Functional Expertise:

Solutions Management

  • Provide key knowledge, insight, and informational guidance related to the integration of data and design of the holistic data landscape in support of the EDGE organization's objectives
  • Translate Decision Support Requirements related to KPI's, Indices, and other analytical insights into Executable strategies, approaches and platform designs or other means of information delivery
  • Produce & Manage all Decision Support Solution Design Frameworks and their supporting Documentation
  • Identify and Propose new capabilities and improvements to Decision Support capabilities
  • Guide, Advise and Support other teams on implementation issues related to application of data related capabilities and approaches
  • Perform expert oversight and guidance for delivery of assigned Decision Support Solutions
  • Support Business Information Architects in the communication and interpretation of information and analysis to business leadership

Functional Design & Implementation

  • Provide critical data and information design services and guidance to all Southern Company Gas business operations in support of day to day and strategic planning activities of the company
  • Gather, Manage, Analyze, Integrate & Translate Decision Support Requirements into an Enterprise Logical Data Model
  • Identify, Manage and Maintain Assignment and Ownership of Physical Sources for Logical Data Model Data
  • Manage, Design and Build Ongoing Changes & Enhancements to the Logical Data Model
  • Define and Design all Decision Support related Logic, Output, Rules, Error/Gap Management and Scoring Specifications
  • QA, Test and Acceptance for all Decision Support Extraction, Storage & Management Solutions

General

  • Advises on cost and resource estimates and plans used in the annual budget cycles
  • Support EDGE Project related assignments as required
  • Coordinates with the TO to identify approaches and solutions to data and architectural implementation problems related to the supporting EDGE solutions platforms
  • Possess some knowledge of the overall business data flows related to one or more of the following key business areas:

  • Enterprise Asset Lifecycle Management
  • Customer, Marketing and Revenue Management
  • Corporate and Regulatory
  • Possess some knowledge of the business applications, data management flows and enabling technology platforms related to one or more of the following key solution areas:

  • Supply Chain
  • HR Management
  • Network Operations
  • Specialized business support applications as required

Business Acumen:

  • Identifies inadequate or inefficient systems and recommends new alternatives that improve efficiency or provide new benefits to the organization
  • Anticipates and identifies obstacles that may put assigned projects or tasks at risk; develops approaches and implements solutions to mitigate risk
  • Supports and reports on work plans and milestones for assigned projects and day to day activities
  • Evaluates and recommends approaches and strategies on deployment and application of the tools and technologies adopted by Southern Company with the TO in the development and delivery of solution strategy, platforms, and applications

Engagement:

  • Collaborates with other team members, TO and business managers to resolve complex business issues and problems
  • Develops and maintains productive working relationships with key EDGE and TO managers and staff

Driving Results:

  • Ensures internal controls and governance are achieved in compliance with policies and standards
  • Understands, executes with, and improves on all elements of delivery methodologies used in the day to day execution of their assigned projects, activities, and tasks
  • Supports the development process deliverables in collaboration with the TO on all EDGE Solution related Deliverables

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Information Management or equivalent) or equivalent related work experience

Preferred:

  • Master's degree in related discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Information Management or equivalent) or equivalent related work experience

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • 10 years data-oriented solution architecture development experience utilizing Both On-Premises and Cloud (Azure) modern data architecture platforms and patterns.
  • 8 years of experience developing context diagrams as well as conceptual, logical, physical architecture, data model and ER diagrams as well as data orchestration diagrams.
  • 6 years hands-on experience designing and implementing data models for structured and unstructured datasets utilizing tools such as ERWIN, SQL Developer, SSMS, Visual Studio and Visio.
  • Ability to deliver results in a cross functional team environment

Preferred:

  • Expert knowledge and hands-on experience working with SQL.
  • Hands on experience working with relational databases such as Oracle, SQL Server as well as Azure Data Lake, Synapse Data Warehouse.
  • Experience in Data Governance processes and tools such as Informatica Data Catalog

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Tools
  • Experience in Data Quality processes and tools such as DQS
  • Hands-on experience developing big data technologies such as Distributed file Systems, HIVE and Spark
  • Ability to provide guidance on app/data performance, high availability and disaster recovery
  • Experience with designing re-usable solution components and perform data model integrity checks
  • Experience working in a medium to large enterprise setting and collaborating multiple cross-functional teams
  • Experience working on concurrent architecture assignments on multiple projects.
  • Significant knowledge of business requirements and solutions design methodologies, tools, and approaches
  • Significant knowledge of graphical modeling approaches, tools, and repositories
  • Significant knowledge of Logical and Physical Data Modelling approaches, tools, and methodologies, and supporting software platforms
