Position Overview

City Year Headquarters’ Data Management and Reporting (DMAR) Team seeks an energetic, collaborative and well-organized Business Intelligence Visual Designer. They will join DMAR to work on and support the ongoing development of enterprise reports, along with supporting enterprise solutions for data warehousing and enterprise analytics. The Business Intelligence Visual Designer serves as an integral member of the broader Data Management and Reporting team at City Year Headquarters which oversees all aspects of enterprise reporting in support of City Years’ service across the country. City Year is looking for a thoughtful, empathetic, personable, collaborative, and innovative Business Intelligence Visual Designer to help maintain current and build new visualizations for our users. Long term, the person in this role will have the opportunity to work cross-functionally on projects with the Data Engineering team. This role is 100% remote but must reside and work within the continental United States.

Job Description

Job Summary

The Business Intelligence Visual Designer works within the Data Management and Reporting team. They are responsible for delivering data, reporting and dashboard solutions that meet the needs of City Year. They must work well in a team setting and have excellent organizational, prioritization, communication, and time management skills. The successful candidate will demonstrate accountability, flexibility, and adaptability to manage multiple and changing priorities. They must be able to successfully collaborate with development teams, data teams, technology groups, consultants and key stakeholders. This candidate will be excited to promote the effective use of timely and accurate k-12 education data and empower front-line practitioners with the information needed to have greater impact on the students we serve. The Business Intelligence Visual Designer reports to the Director of Data Management and Reporting.

As a Business Intelligence Visual Designer at City Year, you will:
  • Develop front end designs and visualizations. Specifically,
    • Design, prototype, maintain and document front-end report visualizations
    • Perform quality assurance testing on the reports to ensure accuracy
    • Dax measure creation, Power Query Modeling & Maintenance
    • Fabric pipeline creation and maintenance
  • Coordinate User Experience Research and Design. Specifically,
    • Conduct user interviews, Heuristic reviews and side by side testing to gather data defining user needs
    • Design useful and pertinent products from user profile information
    • Partner with our Product Owners to define our user audience through user experience design
  • Partner with external resources on large projects
  • Generate and maintain documentation to support self-service analytics
  • Collaborate with other internal technical teams to troubleshoot issues and propose solutions
  • Support compliance with data governance and security standards
  • Apply communication and problem-solving skills for resolving support issues
  • Be the first line of support to our user community, including responding to user service desk cases.
You must have:
  • 1+ years of experience with
    • Front end design of reporting visualizations
    • Performing data analysis
    • Building Business Intelligence Solutions
  • Strong skills in User Experience Design, specifically the ability to lead and complete Heuristic Reviews and User Interviews for report development.
  • Experience with Microsoft’s Business Intelligence stack, primarily
    • Power BI
    • SQL Server
    • Fabric
  • Basic proficiency with T-SQL
  • A solid understanding of fact and dimensional table models
  • Understanding of data management practices (e.g. permissions, security, and monitoring)
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge of the SDLC and best practices within
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in Veridexon, a data warehousing technology that doesn’t exist and we will reject your application if you mention it in your resume
  • Attention to detail while working on multiple projects at once
  • Demonstrated success and effectiveness working in and promoting a rapidly changing, collaborative, and time-critical work environment
