The role:
As a Data Analyst within Morningstar's Performance & Portfolio Operations team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of investment performance data and portfolio information. You will work cross-functionally with data research teams, operations, and client service groups to maintain high data quality standards for thousands of funds and portfolios globally.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze performance calculations and methodologies to ensure compliance with industry standards.
- Manage escalations and troubleshoot data anomalies in collaboration with data providers and internal teams.
- Develop and maintain automated validations, reports, and analytical tools to improve data workflows.
- Partner with IT and database teams to optimize data extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL) processes.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior analysts and contribute to team knowledge sharing and training.
- Support month-end and quarter-end close cycles for performance data delivery and audit processes.
- Collaborate with product managers and client-facing teams to ensure timely communication around data issues and enhancements.
- Participate in continuous process improvement initiatives using methodologies like Lean Six Sigma.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience in financial data analysis, preferably within mutual funds, ETFs, or portfolio operations.
- Proficiency in SQL and Excel for data querying, transformation, and analysis.
- Understanding of portfolio performance concepts (time-weighted returns, money-weighted returns), NAV, and dividend mechanics.
- Experience with data quality frameworks, anomaly detection, and root cause analysis.
- Knowledge of investment fund structures, pricing policies, and regulatory reporting requirements.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to translate complex data issues for non-technical stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
