Castle Hill Gaming (CHG), with headquarters in Charlottesville, VA, was launched in 2013 by a group of seasoned veterans of the online video and casino gaming industries. Many of our team members have worked together for over 15 years, utilizing decades of experience, insight, and knowledge to create the most entertaining Class II, Class III, and Historical Horse Racing (HHR) gaming machines in the market.

Position Overview

Castle Hill Gaming’s Data Team is looking for a data-science intern to work with the staff to validate newly loaded data, audit historical data, refine data pipeline infrastructure, and assist staff with analytic and visualization efforts as time allows.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following

Over the course of the internship, you will:

• Learn about the business and its data by validating and normalizing information provided by our customers.
• Audit historical data (pre-2022) for consistency and accuracy in accordance with CHG standards.
• Work with the Data Team to refine the core data pipeline. This involves schema design and review for the core data warehouse; writing SQL code to streamline the foundational query graph; and Python coding for key interfaces to BI and reporting tools.
• As time allows, assist the Data Team staff with reporting, analytics, and business-process recommendations.

Day to day you will:

• Talk to people. Learning a new organization takes time, as does figuring out what people have and need. The most efficient way to find out is to ask.
• Validate data and transformations done by other members of the team to ensure that we are following established best practice.
• Track down data. Although we continue to automate our data pipeline, there are elements that still move through the process manually.
• Clean and stage data. If new reports come in, find them, and figure out if they are well formed. If they’re not, figure out how to fix them so that we can use them. We use Excel, SQL, and code for much of our data review and transformation.
• As needed, analyze data. We have flexibility on programming languages and tools, although we have local expertise in R, Python, C/C++, Java, and Scala. We are an AWS shop.
• Document all of the things. We need to ensure that all data and processes are documented so that anyone else can validate and recreate the work. This applies to the interns just as much as it applies to the permanent staff.

Work Environment

• Part-time, hybrid (in-office, remote) position
• Flexible hours as long as working during core business hours of 10:00am to 4:00pm Eastern Time. The expectation is that this position will work 10-20 hours per week.
• Brand new office building at Stonefield in Charlottesville, VA
• Team collaboration environment

Education, training, and experience required

Required

• At least one year of formal education in business information systems or data science, including relational databases and SQL.
• Familiarity with Microsoft tools, including Windows and Office.
• Excellent communication skills, both speaking and writing.
• Initiative to ask questions, investigate solutions, and solve problems.

Preferred

• Formal training in computer science and software development.
• Working knowledge of statistics and statistical reasoning.
• Experience in at least one higher-level programming language/environment such as Python, R, or MATLAB.
