Do you enjoy building modern data platforms, solving complex data challenges, and delivering solutions that have a real impact on business outcomes?

At Heartland, we're looking for a Data Engineer - Projects to help shape and deliver strategic data initiatives across both New Zealand and Australia. You'll work with modern cloud technologies including Snowflake, dbt, Azure Data Factory, Data Vault 2.0, and AtScale, building scalable data products that support everything from regulatory reporting and finance analytics to platform migrations and business transformation programmes.

This is an opportunity to work on meaningful projects within a growing financial services organisation that is investing heavily in its data and digital capabilities. You'll have the chance to influence solution design, work closely with stakeholders across the business, and help establish best-practice data engineering standards.

Why this role is exciting

  • Work with a modern cloud data stack: Snowflake, dbt, Azure Data Factory, DV2 and AtScale.
  • Deliver high-impact projects that directly support strategic business initiatives.
  • Join a collaborative team where your technical expertise and ideas are valued.
  • Help shape the future of data at a digital-first financial services organisation.
  • Gain exposure to both New Zealand and Australian banking environments.
  • Enjoy a balance of hands-on engineering, solution design, stakeholder engagement and innovation.

Does this sound like you?

You're passionate about data engineering and enjoy turning complex business requirements into scalable, reliable data solutions. You thrive in project environments, enjoy solving challenging problems, and take pride in delivering high-quality outcomes.

You'll bring proven experience in:

  • Delivering data engineering solutions in production environments, including project delivery, controlled releases and stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong hands-on engineering using Snowflake and SQL, including performance optimisation and cost-conscious design.
  • Developing and supporting dbt in production, including models, testing, documentation, lineage and deployment practices.
  • Building and operating ingestion and orchestration solutions, ideally using Azure Data Factory.
  • Applying dimensional modelling and/or Data Vault 2.0 concepts to meet business requirements.
  • Delivering governed semantic layer solutions, ideally with AtScale or similar technologies.
  • Working within regulated industries where data accuracy, governance and traceability are critical.

Your strengths include:

  • Advanced SQL and data transformation skills.
  • Designing solutions that are maintainable, performant and operationally supportable.
  • Navigating ambiguity and translating business needs into practical technical solutions.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability.
  • Communicating effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Following disciplined engineering practices including Git/GitHub, code reviews, testing and documentation.
  • Managing competing priorities while maintaining delivery quality and transparency
