Summary Generated by Built In

Nium provides global infrastructure for real-time cross-border payments. We were founded on the mission to deliver the global payments infrastructure of tomorrow, today. Our platform enables banks, fintechs, and global businesses to move money instantly, everywhere.

Co-headquartered in San Francisco and Singapore with offices in 14 markets worldwide, we are entering one of the most exciting chapters in our journey. In March 2026, we delivered the largest month in our 11-year history with record revenue, record volumes, and EBITDA profitability. Today, Nium moves nearly $60B in payments annually, almost entirely for enterprises, while continuing to strengthen an already healthy balance sheet.

It is an incredible time to join us, and we are only just getting started.

Our payout network spans 190+ countries and 100 currencies, with 100 + corridors in real time. We power seamless transfers to accounts, wallets, and cards, support local collections in 35 markets, and as a principal card issuer on Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and UATP, Nium issues over 50 million card tokens every year. Backed by regulatory licenses in 40+ markets, we make it simple for our partners to onboard, integrate, and scale globally. This scale and innovation have earned us recognition as one of CNBC’s World’s Top Fintech Companies 2025, winner of Best Cross-Border Payments Solution at the PayTech Awards, and inclusion in FXC Intelligence’s Top 100 Cross-Border Payments Companies list.

In 2024, we raised US$50 million in Series E funding at a US$1.4 billion valuation to accelerate network expansion, product innovation, and talent growth. With the B2B payments market projected to hit US$175 trillion by 2030, Nium offers ambitious builders the chance to shape the future of global money movement with the scale of a leader and the energy of a high-growth company.

At Nium, we move money across the globe, powering card issuance, payments, and financial infrastructure that businesses and people rely on every day. We're a fast-growing fintech operating at scale, and this summer, we're opening a seat on the team for someone curious, hungry to learn, and ready to see what real data engineering looks like from the inside.

This isn't a "make the slides and watch from the sidelines" internship. You'll be embedded in our data engineering team, writing code that ships, and contributing to a product that real people use.

As a Data Engineering Intern, you’ll work with our data engineering team to help build and maintain the systems that power our data platform. This internship is designed to give you hands-on experience with modern data technologies and real-world datasets

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the development and maintenance of data pipelines and workflows.
  • Assisting with ingesting and transforming data from multiple sources, such as MySQL databases and real-time Kafka streams.
  • Writing and improving SQL queries used for analytics and reporting.
  • Attending standups, sprint planning, code reviews — the full rhythm of a data engineering team
  • Collaborating with experienced engineers to turn business needs into technical solutions.
  • Asking questions, breaking things (safely), and learning how a fintech scales.
  • You’ll gain exposure to modern data engineering tools and work closely with mentors who will help you grow your technical skills.

Requirements

  • You're studying Computer Science, Software Engineering, or something adjacent at University of Malta or MCAST.
  • You're genuinely curious how real-world data systems are built — how data is collected, transformed and turned into something useful
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team.
  • Curiosity, a problem-solving mindset, and eagerness to take initiative.
  • You can write some code (in any language - we care more about thinking than syntax)
  • Please note that this summer internship is open to candidates who are currently pursuing their studies in Malta.

Nice to Have (But Not Required)

  • Interest in fintech, payments, or data-driven products.
  • Foundational SQL knowledge and comfort writing queries.
  • Basic Python skills or a strong willingness to develop them.
  • No prior professional experience required, we value potential, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

What you'll walk away with

- Real lines of code in a production fintech system
- An understanding of how data engineering teams actually work — agile, CI/CD, code reviews, the works
- A network inside a global payments company
- Honestly? A much stronger CV than most of your classmates
