What We’re Looking For

The Data Engineer plays a key role in EROAD’s enterprise data transformation journey. This role is a full-stack data engineering role, primarily focused on analytics engineering half of data engineering to build normalised Kimball tables using dbt Cloud and Snowflake. This role will also include metadata-driven ingestion and some Power BI reporting. You will contribute to end-to-end data delivery, from ingesting source data through to transforming it and enabling high quality self-service reporting and analytics, with a focus on enabling self-service for users using Snowflake tables.

The successful candidate will work closely with other engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality, scalable data solutions that support self-service analytics and evidence-based decision-making.

About the Role

Job Responsibilities

Data Engineering (10% of development work)

  • Support data ingestion processes from source systems into Snowflake.
  • Contribute to data quality checks, documentation, and testing.
  • Participate in platform monitoring and troubleshooting.

Analytics Engineering (80% of development work)

  • Develop and maintain modern dbt models and pipelines for data transformation into normalised Kimball tables and denormalised report tables.
  • Contribute to data quality checks, documentation, and testing.
  • Participate in platform monitoring and troubleshooting.

Power BI Development (10% of development work)

  • Design, build, and maintain Power BI dashboards.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into effective visualizations.
  • Optimize report performance and ensure data accuracy and consistency.
  • Support Power BI governance, including workspace management, access control, and usage monitoring.

Collaboration & Enablement

  • Implement best practices in data modelling and transformation.
  • Provide support and training to business users on Power BI usage.
  • Help promote a self-service analytics culture across the organization.

Health and Safety

Job Qualifications

Competencies

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Eagerness to learn and grow in modern data engineering practices.

Skills & Required Experience

Required Skills

  • Skilled in using dbt Cloud for data transformation.
  • Proficient in Snowflake (or comparable cloud data platforms).
  • Proficient in data visualisation in Power BI (or similar BI tools).
  • Advanced SQL skills with a solid understanding of modern data modelling concepts.

Required Experience

  • 3+ years of dbt Cloud or dbt Core development experience.
  • Experience in Power BI development in a commercial/business environment.
  • Background working with cloud-based data warehousing platforms (e.g. Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery).
  • Involvement in ELT processes and data pipeline development.
  • Practical experience applying modern data warehouse ELT patterns and methodologies using modern tooling.
  • Demonstrated success collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver data solutions.
  • Familiarity with enterprise systems (e.g. D365, Salesforce).
  • Relevant certifications and formal training in Snowflake, dbt, or Power BI.

Preferred Skills

  • Exposure to Microsoft Fabric and Azure Data Factory.
  • Understanding of data governance and self-service BI principles.

Minimum Requirements

  • Must be authorized to work in New Zealand already (we will not sponsor work visas).
  • Must be able to work in our Albany, Auckland office 4 days per week.
