Our Quality and Outcomes team plays a critical role in monitoring, measuring, and improving patient care. Through accurate clinical data collection and reporting, the team supports regulatory compliance, quality improvement initiatives, accreditation activities, and strategic service line goals.

As a Clinical Data Abstractor, you will review medical records and extract key clinical information for quality reporting programs, registries, and performance improvement initiatives. This role requires strong analytical skills, medical terminology knowledge, and a commitment to maintaining the highest levels of confidentiality and data integrity.

How you'll contribute

A Clinical Data Abstractor who excels in this role:

  • Reviews and abstracts clinical information from medical records according to regulatory and registry specifications, including CMS, TJC, AHA-GWTG, ACC, STS, SVS, and PHC4 guidelines.
  • Performs data collection for inpatient and outpatient quality reporting programs.
  • Enters clinical findings into computerized and web-based systems for reporting, analysis, benchmarking, and submission purposes.
  • Supports cardiovascular service line quality outcomes through accurate data collection and reporting.
  • Maintains current knowledge of regulatory requirements, abstraction guidelines, and registry specifications.
  • Collaborates with clinicians and healthcare leaders by providing guidance regarding quality measure definitions and reporting requirements.
  • Maintains established quality standards and participates in internal and external validation processes.
  • Participates on performance improvement teams and quality initiatives as assigned.
  • Maintains records of educational activities, special projects, and abstraction-related work.
  • Assists with accreditation preparation activities and other departmental projects.
  • Protects the confidentiality of all patient, clinical, financial, and organizational information.
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail, critical thinking, and organizational skills.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What we're looking for

We are seeking a detail-oriented healthcare professional with strong analytical and data management skills who is passionate about improving healthcare quality and outcomes.

Education:

  • Medical Secretary, Medical Assistant, EMT/Paramedic, LPN, Associate Degree in a healthcare-related field, or equivalent healthcare education/license required.

Experience:

  • Medical terminology knowledge required.
  • Strong critical thinking skills required.
  • Previous data entry experience preferred.
  • Previous quality data abstraction experience preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of pharmaceuticals, treatment modalities, anatomy, physiology, and medical acronyms preferred.

Licensure/Certification:

  • Appropriate certification, license, or registration based on educational background required.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Accurate and precise data collection and analytical skills.
  • Ability to review and interpret medical records, diagnostic reports, and clinical documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Proficient computer and data entry skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and self-directed.
  • Ability to manage confidential information with professionalism and discretion.
