Job Description

We are looking for an enthusiastic engineering student to work as part of our East Region Dams Practice in our Germantown, MD, Arlington, VA, or Washington, D.C. offices as a Dam Safety Engineering Summer 2026 Intern. We are seeking a candidate who has a strong interest in Dams with a focus on one of the following disciplines: structural, geotechnical, or hydrologic and hydraulic engineering. This position will support a variety Dam Engineering projects across the East region. The successful candidate will join the AECOM dams team which is consistently ranked as the #1 firm in Dams and Reservoirs by ENR and will have access to exciting career opportunities.

This position is expected to begin in May 2026.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing support for projects including design, analysis, inspection, construction observation, and regulatory compliance activities associated with a variety of dams.
  • Working with multi-disciplinary teams on various projects related to dams and other hydraulic structures.
  • Flexibility and willingness to travel for project work part time as needed.
  • Work under supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member.​​​​​

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Candidates must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis/interest in structural, geotechnical, or hydrologic and hydraulic engineering and must have completed at least 3 years of study. Candidates who have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree and plan to continue with the Master’s degree are eligible to apply for these positions. Recent graduates must have been enrolled in their bachelor’s degree in the most previous school term with an interest in pursuing an advanced degree in the same or similar discipline at the conclusion of the internship.
  • Due to the nature of the work, U.S. Citizenship is required for this role. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices.
  • Strong desire to learn and a professional drive.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Programs. Capable of functioning with spreadsheets, word processing, and standard office software.
  • A strong sense of commitment and a desire to work in a dynamic deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to travel for project work part-time as needed.
  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Knowledge of dam engineering concepts through coursework or work experience.
  • Experience in AutoCAD.

Additional Information

  • Travel is required for this position.  
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes office work at our Germantown, MD, Arlington, VA, or Washington, D.C. office locations. The selected candidate must be available to work in Germantown, MD, Arlington, VA, or Washington, D.C. on a scheduled basis.
