Safety Management Systems (SMS), an Acadian Company, is seeking an experienced HSE Specialist to support oil and gas drilling and completions operations throughout West Virginia.

 

This role is ideal for a safety professional who thrives in the field, enjoys partnering with operational teams, and is passionate about reducing risk, improving compliance, and strengthening safety culture. As the on-site HSE expert, you will work directly with company personnel, contractors, and customers to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient operations.

What You'll Do

As an HSE Specialist, you will serve as the primary safety resource on assigned drilling and completions projects, supporting field operations through proactive risk management, regulatory compliance, incident prevention, and continuous improvement initiatives.

 

Health, Safety & Environmental Leadership

  • Implement and maintain project-specific HSE programs and initiatives
  • Promote a strong safety culture across all site activities
  • Provide guidance on OSHA regulations, company policies, and industry best practices
  • Support leadership teams in achieving safety and performance objectives

 

Risk Assessment & Regulatory Compliance

  • Conduct hazard assessments, site inspections, and safety audits
  • Identify risks and develop corrective and preventive actions
  • Monitor compliance with OSHA regulations and company standards
  • Ensure contractors and subcontractors meet project safety requirements
  • Participate in safety planning and risk mitigation activities

 

Incident Investigation & Reporting

  • Lead incident investigations and root cause analyses
  • Develop recommendations to prevent recurrence
  • Prepare detailed reports and documentation for management and clients
  • Track leading and lagging safety indicators
  • Support corrective action follow-up and closure

 

Training & Field Support

  • Conduct safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions
  • Communicate site-specific safety expectations to personnel
  • Partner with operational and contractor leadership to resolve safety concerns
  • Support the development and enhancement of safety management systems

 

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve HSE performance
  • Assist in developing policies, procedures, and safety initiatives
  • Drive measurable improvements in safety culture and regulatory compliance

 

Required Qualifications

Please Apply If You Meet the Following Requirements:

  • 3-5 years of HSE experience supporting oil and gas drilling and completions operations
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA regulations and industry safety standards
  • Experience conducting:
    • Hazard assessments and risk analyses
    • Safety audits and inspections
    • Incident investigations and root cause analyses
    • Regulatory compliance activities
  • Experience implementing and enforcing safety policies and procedures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a field-based environment
  • Proficiency with safety documentation, reporting, and recordkeeping

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety, Occupational Health, Environmental Science, or a related field
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST)
  • Experience managing safety performance across multiple contractors and subcontractors
  • Previous experience supporting projects in West Virginia
