A Brief Overview
Performs microscopic screening of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Identifies all cases with abnormal findings for pathologist review, recording all findings in the EMR to produce accurate reports. Processes both gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Works with pathologists and other members of the healthcare and laboratory team to provide high quality laboratory results while upholding the Stormont Vail Tenets of compassion, patient safety and privacy, and improving the health of our community.
Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Specializing in cytotechnology. Required

Skills and Abilities

  • Follows all applicable OSHA guidelines. Follows all hospital and departmental safety procedures. (Required proficiency)
  • Proficient in scientific principles, procedures, and protocols. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to organize work and establish priorities. (Required proficiency)
  • Strong attention to detail. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Cytotechnologist (CT) - ASCP Registry eligible also accepted (must take and pass registry within six months of hire date). Required

What you will do

  • Utilizing microscopic technique, screens glass slides according to established procedure for detecting abnormal or cancerous cells. Records findings accurately in the medical record.
  • Identifies and appropriately marks cellular abnormalities. Works in close collaboration with pathologists to provide accurate and timely diagnoses.
  • Assists with fine needle aspiration collection and evaluation.
  • Correlates cytologic findings with findings from subsequent biopsies.
  • Receives and processes gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Produces high-quality stained slides.
  • Maintains proficiency testing as set forth by governing bodies. Assures that workload recording is accurate and complete so that screening limits are not exceeded.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies and equipment for the department.
  • Assists with teaching, training and mentoring cytotechnologist and medical lab assistant interns and trainees.
  • Assists department leadership in development of budget, policies, procedures, work standards, and goal-setting.
