Job Summary & Responsibilities

Essential Job Duties:

  • Accurately screen cytologic specimens including both gynecologic and non-gynecologic sources
  • Documents slide interpretation results of each case examined or reviewed in accordance with established department reporting procedures; For each 24 hour period, documents:
  • The total number of slides examined
  • The number of hours spent examining slides
  • Assess and troubleshoot routine and special stain preparations
  • Process routine cytology slides and perform special stain techniques using both manual and automated methods
  • Assist in training new employees; Provide mentoring to Cytology Preparation Technicians
  • Adheres to all PBM Safety policies and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies
  • Handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safely
  • Learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices
  • Ensure work area has proper coverage at all times during the work shift, ie coverage for meal and/or rest periods
  • Ensure timely distribution of completed patient materials to assigned pathologists
  • Immediately notifies supervisory personnel of malfunctioning instrumentation
  • Protects confidentiality of patient information and results at all times
  • Cross train in other areas as assigned or requested
  • Perform other duties as assigned or requested
Preferred Qualifications

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree; Eligibility to obtain certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists
  • Certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry and 3 years of previous experience as a screening Cytotechnologist preferred
  • Working knowledge of cytology slide processing
  • Demonstrated ability to perform tasks with a high degree of accuracy and quality
  • Demonstrated verbal and written command of the English language; Ability to communicate clearly and effectively
  • Demonstrated ability exercise independent judgment under minimal supervision; Ability to function as a member of a team
  • Ability to comply with HIPAA regulations
  • Working knowledge of computer applications
  • Demonstrated customer service focused skills
  • Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks in a limited time frame

Skills Required

  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent

  • Three years of previous experience as a screening Cytotechnologist
  • Working knowledge of cytology slide processing
