Ready to take on complex network challenges and play a key role in keeping our customers connected?
We’re looking for a Customer Network Engineer to join our Network Operations function. Based from our Manchester office on a hybrid basis, you’ll work as part of an experienced network team whose other members work remotely — giving you the opportunity to take real ownership while still having the support and expertise of the wider team around you.
This is a hands-on technical role where you’ll design, configure, deploy and troubleshoot customer network solutions across our growing national infrastructure.
You’ll work across technologies including routing, switching, firewalls, SD-WAN, MPLS, VPNs, LAN and WLAN, supporting the delivery of complex B2B customer solutions from initial design through to successful deployment.
As our network continues to grow, you’ll also gain exposure to full-fibre infrastructure, automation, software-defined networking and NFV, while becoming a trusted technical escalation point within Network Operations.
What you'll be doing
- Configure and deploy routers, switches, firewalls and wireless network solutions.
- Turn complex customer High Level Designs (HLDs) into practical, deliverable Low Level Designs (LLDs).
- Provision and thoroughly test new customer services, ensuring performance, security and successful service delivery.
- Configure and implement WAN technologies including SD-WAN, MPLS and VPN solutions.
- Configure firewalls, security policies, IPSec/SSL VPNs and intrusion prevention.
- Troubleshoot complex technical issues, working closely with internal teams and external suppliers to get to resolution.
- Act as a technical escalation point for L1 and L2 Network Support.
- Proactively identify opportunities to improve network performance, resilience and security.
- Create and maintain clear network diagrams, configurations, procedures and technical documentation.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
You’ll be a technically strong network engineer who enjoys solving problems, taking ownership and working in a fast-moving customer environment.
Ideally, you'll bring:
- 2–3+ years' experience in network engineering or technical provisioning within an ISP or managed service provider environment, ideally supporting B2B customers.
- Strong networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, switching and network security.
- Hands-on experience configuring and deploying Fortinet firewalls.
- Experience with SD-WAN, MPLS, VPN, LAN and WLAN technologies.
- The ability to troubleshoot complex network issues and see them through to resolution.
- Strong technical documentation skills, including producing network diagrams and configuration documentation.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to make complex technical information clear to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- The confidence to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of a wider technical team.
- Strong organisation and the ability to prioritise effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Experience with Cisco, Juniper, Fortinet or Juniper Mist would be a real advantage, as would CCNA, FCA, JNCIA-MistAI or equivalent certification.
Knowledge of network automation and scripting using tools such as Python or Ansible would also be highly desirable.
