RoleWe are looking for an exceptional technologist to define the next generation of BeReal's technology.
You will go deep with our strongest engineers, challenge technical decisions across Mobile and Backend, lead major transformations, raise the technical level of the organization, and define how AI changes the way BeReal engineers build software.
You report directly to BeReal's CEO.
What you'll do:
Define BeReal's long-term technical direction across Mobile, Backend, Data and infrastructure.
Lead the transformation of a large native mobile application carrying significant legacy architecture.
Set technical principles that allow teams to move quickly without degrading reliability, performance or maintainability.
Challenge the hardest technical decisions alongside Staff-level engineers.
Raise technical standards across the organization without centralizing every decision.
Ensure BeReal remains reliable under highly concentrated traffic spikes from tens of millions of users.
Guide major migrations and decide when to evolve incrementally vs rewrite.
Define how AI transforms coding, testing, debugging, migrations, architecture and developer tooling.
Partner with the CEO and engineering leadership on BeReal's most important technical bets.

ProfileExceptional technical track record.
Architect-level depth; able to challenge excellent Staff / Principal engineers.
Deep understanding of native mobile engineering.
Strong Backend and distributed-systems fundamentals at consumer scale.
Proven experience with significant legacy transformations.
Evidence of raising the technical level of an engineering organization, not just designing systems personally.
Strong production judgment: reliability, failure modes, performance and scale.
Strong judgment around technical investment, prioritization and rewrite vs migration.
Practical point of view on AI applied to software engineering.
Experience with high-scale consumer products or comparable high-throughput systems.
Strong product sense and excellent communication.

Skills Required
- 12+ years in engineering
- 6+ years leading leaders
- Experience leading organizations of ~80-200+ engineers
- Experience scaling high-traffic consumer products or high-throughput infrastructure
- Architect-level depth in distributed systems and trade-offs
- Built regression-prevention systems for many teams shipping in parallel
- Experience leading distributed teams with strong async communication, metrics, and clear writing
- Familiarity with the listed stack (GCP, Kubernetes, Terraform, ArgoCD, Datadog, Fastly, Go, Cloud Spanner, Redis, PostgreSQL, Pub/Sub, Swift/SwiftUI, Kotlin, BigQuery, Airflow, DBT, Amplitude)
- Experience completing large migrations (e.g., Node.js to Go) without slowing delivery
- Experience in consumer social, camera/media products, or native mobile orgs
