POSITION SUMMARY
The Surgical Technician assists surgeons and other surgical staff under the supervision of a surgeon or registered nurse in the operating room. They may help set up the operating room, prepare patients for surgery or adjust equipment as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education: High School diploma or GED. Grandfathered in as a non-certified Surgical Technician as evidenced by experience prior to 2009 OR (1) has successfully completed an accredited educational program for surgical technologists and holds and maintains certification as a surgical technologist by: (A) the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor; (B) the National Center for Competency Testing or its successor; or (C) another surgical technologist certification program approved by the department; (2) has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the army, navy, air force, marine corps, or coast guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service; (3) was employed to practice surgical technology in a health care facility before September 1, 2009; or (4) is in the service of the federal government, to the extent the person is performing duties related to that service.

Required Licenses/Certifications: If not Grandfathered in as a non-certified tech, must hold and maintain Surgical Technologist certification or has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the army, navy, air force, marine corps, or coast guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service;. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Knowledge of Obstetrics operating rooms, supplies, equipment, unit protocols, policies, and procedures. Must be able to react quickly and efficiently in emergency situations. Must be able to communicate effectively with physicians, staff, and patients. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon. H/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
Preferred Qualification: 2 years experience

9. Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed.
10. Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants.
11. Helps in draping sterile field.
12. Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during procedure / or may assist surgeon during procedure.

Skills Required
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program and maintenance of Surgical Technologist certification (NBSTSA, NCCT, or department-approved)
- Completion of appropriate military surgical technology training (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or US Public Health Service) as an alternative to civilian certification
- Appropriate CPR certification
- Knowledge of obstetrics operating rooms, supplies, equipment, unit protocols, policies, and procedures
- Ability to react quickly in emergencies, communicate effectively with physicians/staff/patients, anticipate surgeon needs, and maintain sterile field
- Two years experience
