Job Description
The Department Superintendent is responsible for all aspects of production and operations of the Crushing Plant which include reception of beans, storage, pellet hulls, silos and meal load out area, and the Preparation and Extraction process. This position works independently with supervision to help develop and support the goals and strategies of LDC and the facility. Primary function is to ensure that process in the Crush Plant is completed in a safe and efficient manner in compliance with government regulations and Company standards.
Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions
Management of Crush Plant Operations:
Manages daily performance of the Crush team to achieve or exceed Company objectives:
- Completes regular checks of Crush staff and equipment to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed, and Company standards are met.
- Maintains proper coverage by managing the Crush staffing schedules.
- Plans and manages the Crush budget to meet facility needs and production goals.
- Maintains inventory of supplies to ensure efficient Crush operations.
- Make improvements, propose and follow Capital Expense Projects to Crush process as necessary to maximize efficiency, increase product quality and/or lower costs.
- Accountable for all operational aspects of the crush process and efficient performance of production supervisor functions on a daily basis consistent with ensuring a safe workplace, meeting Key Performance Indicators, producing food safe product, and maintaining an environmentally sound facility.
- Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to Crush and to the plant being a continuous SHE leader
- Ensure all applicable government regulations are met at all times.
- Accountable for meeting budgets, efficiencies, manufacturing costs, and capital expenditures in all areas of production to meet facility needs and production goals
- Maintain proper coverage by managing the crush staffing schedules
- Make improvements to crush process as necessary to maximize efficiency, increase product quality and/or lower costs.
- Review operations and confer with technical or administrative resources to resolve production opportunities, improve efficiency, or otherwise reduce cost
- Complete regular checks of Crush staff and equipment to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed and Company standards are met.
- Develop training and operating procedures as needed / directed.
- Responds to Crush Plant issues or alarms and leads investigations as necessary
- Maintain inventory of supplies to ensure efficient crush operations.
Reporting and Communication:
- Collects, records and analyzes Crush Plant data to optimize efficiencies and product quality
- Serves as the liaison between the Operations Manager the Crush staff
- Notifies the Plant Manager of potential safety hazards, equipment failures, operational inconsistencies and employee incidents
- Reports any Preparation and extraction equipment issues to maintenance staff.
Training and Coaching:
- Delivers job-related training to Crush staff to increase efficiency and safety
- Coaches staff on the Company’s performance expectations and provides ongoing performance feedback
SHE Program
Is an active member of the facility SHE Program. Maintains good working knowledge of SHE policies, rules and procedures applicable to area of responsibility and ensures all applicable requirements are adhered to. Ensures employees are provided required training for area assigned, and jobs and tasks prior to assigning work. Ensures area of responsibility is maintained in orderly and safe manner. Ensures unsafe working conditions are remedied as soon as practicable.

Qualifications
Education/Professional Certifications/Licenses
Basic qualifications:
- High school diploma as minimum
Preferred qualification
- BS Degree in Engineering or Technical Science and/or equivalent work experience
Experience
- 5+ years related experience in Crush Process ( Preparation and Extraction) as a supervisor or Manager
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Licenses (including any physical demands)
Basic qualifications:
- Demonstrated leadership ability in a plant management position. Able to set clear, reasonable expectations and hold staff accountable
- General knowledge of soybean /Oilseeds crushing processing operations preferred
- Knowledge of Process Safety Management preferred
- Knowledge of the regulatory requirements the facility operates under (e.g., OSHA, EPA, USDA) preferred
- Knowledge of ISO 9000 and BQ-9000 desirable
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to provide and maintain a safe and effective working environment.
- Project development and management experience desirable
- Reliability-Centered Maintenance training and experience is highly desirable.

- Typical office equipment: PC, telephone, fax machine
- Production machinery and operating equipment used in the crushing process
Working Conditions
- Interior office work is in a typical climate-controlled office environment. Frequent visits to industrial operations areas are necessary with exposure to variety of temperatures and prevailing weather conditions. Regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids. Occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise. Some stair climbing and heaving lifting is required. Work is sometimes above ground level. Extensions of regular working hours are occasionally necessary to complete time-sensitive projects or to respond to emergencies. Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations.
Employee Supervision
- This position supervises a team of at least two or more plant operations personnel. Has the authority to recommend hiring, firing, & discipline of employees as well as supervise, manage, & direct work.
Decision Making/Accountability
- Plans and controls the Crush process for a soybean crushing and biodiesel plant. Is accountable for ensuring peak Crush efficiencies and product quality while controlling costs. Plans and allocates the work of plant operations personnel to meet facility needs and production goals. Investigates and resolves any Crush issues.
