The Creative Technologist / Hybrid Lab Studio Manager is responsible for the Hybrid Lab, a teaching and learning space for CCA students to experience, experiment and employ digital, electronic, and computational technologies. This Studio Manager is enthusiastic about digital art and design processes and partners with faculty to support use of and instruction in an array of digital and computational technologies such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Processing, and P5.js (Python, C++, Java, and Javascript), Internet of things, projection mapping, machine learning, AR, game design, and web applications. The Hybrid Lab Manager possesses expertise with the safe use of the Hybrid Lab’s tools, materials, and processes, while upholding a safe and equitable professional studio culture for a diverse body of students and faculty.
The Hybrid Lab Studio Manager will supervise a team of 15+ work study students, including Graduate Student Assistants to create an open, accessible and safe learning environment. Experience with a student population is key. They will be responsible for the operating budget and all purchasing and procurement for the Hybrid Lab and will work closely with the Program Chairs, Hybrid Lab Faculty Coordinator, and area faculty to ensure that studio operations are aligned with academic goals and needs. The Creative Technologist collaborates with these academic partners to create instructional units to support the curriculum that include hardware kits and supporting tutorials and documentation. As a member of the Studio Operations team, this employee will be actively engaged in creating new collaborative models and building active and accessible cross-disciplinary spaces for the CCA community.
Please note that CCA is transitioning and working towards a wind down of operations with the 2027 academic year.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

MANAGEMENT & ADMINISTRATION - 20%

  • Provides oversight of the day-to-day operation of the Hybrid Lab.

  • Independently recruits, trains and supervises a work study team of  5-10+ studio monitors. 

  • Coordinates with colleagues and supervisor on the creation and administration of policies and procedures that are consistent with Studio Operations facilities across the college and responsive to the needs of the Program.

  • Manages, processes, monitors, and tracks expenditures and payments, working within the scope of the Hybrid Lab budget.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT - 50%

  • Works with programs to schedule and coordinate the classes that use Hybrid Lab as their primary studio resource.

  • Instructional resource; teaches staff and students to use materials and solve technical problems.

  • Creates and delivers orientations for specific tools and techniques.

  • Approaches faculty on course projects to determine necessary support; provides feedback on curriculum projects, and collaborates on the creation of hardware kits to support course projects. 

  • Teaching and instructing on student projects, both in-person and in the form of creating and curating online resources

  • Coordinates and supports projects and their demands on the labs.

STUDIO OPERATIONS - 25%

  • Manages the operation of studio facilities and ensures a well-maintained and safe environment. 

  • Creates system for and maintains up-to-date orientation manuals and safety training for student work-study monitors, students, and faculty.

  • Updates and maintains the Hybrid Lab page on the CCA Portal website.

  • Acts as a fully contributing team member of Studio Operations and the 4D Studio Operations unit; participates in mutual support and collaboration to the benefit of the CCA Studios and the College as a whole.

  • Responsible for the operating budget and purchasing and procurement for the Hybrid Lab. Will work closely with the Program Chair and area faculty to ensure that studio operations are aligned with academic goals and needs.

  • Delivers tours for potential students, donors and funders.

Other - 5%

  • Manages students in distress.

  • Serves as a member of the College’s Emergency Response Team.

  • Performs additional duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Professional Qualifications

  • BFA or equivalent professional experience required. MFA preferred. 

  • 3 years working experience.

Administrative & Management Experience

  • Confident using independent judgment in decision making.

  • Experience managing a team and working with students preferred

  • Proven success developing relationships across organizations.

  • Developed organizational and task management skills; strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Interest in keeping abreast of a rapidly changing technology marketplace in order to keep the Hybrid Lab equipped with up-to-date equipment. 

Specialized Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency with micro controller hardware and associated peripherals and assembly processes. 

  • Proficiency in using and coaching students in programming languages, IDE's and Libraries commonly implemented in Arduino, Circuit Python, Raspberry Pi, Processing, and P5.js (Python, C++, Java, and Javascript). 

  • Ability to advise students on projects that include IoT, projection mapping, machine learning, AR, game design, and web applications. 

  • Ability to research and provide access to the latest sensors (wearable, environmental, touch, etc), shields, motors, microcontrollers, and complementary AV that meet the changing needs of the institution.

  • Working knowledge of multiple fabrication methods including: Soldering, Circuit Board CNC milling, and/or common ancillary digital prototyping methods including: hand/machine sewing; 3D modeling/printing; laser and vinyl cutting; etc to the extent that they can direct students to the proper department accordingly. 

  • Familiarity with a broad range of materials; proficiency in multiple approaches to making art will be expected. 

  • Knowledge of and commitment to health and safety as they apply to artistic materials and regulations.

  • Familiarity using a variety of software applications including G Suite, Airtable, and Webcheckout, 

  • Comfort working with hand and power tools and troubleshooting equipment and repairs.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • The compensation for this position is $32.97/hour

  • CCA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including the choice of five medical plans, generous holiday, sick & vacation time, a retirement match and tuition remission. CCA covers an average of 91% of the medical plan cost for the employee only and an average of 82% for employees with dependents. POSITION DETAILS:

  • CCA considers a full-time work week to be 37.5 hours per week.

  • Work Mode: campus based

  • Schedule: Mon-Fri 9am-5pm

  • This position is covered under the staff union collective bargaining agreement and will be required to contribute to union dues/agency fees.
