The Role
The Creative Director will lead and reshape Puck's brand design across various touchpoints, ensuring a cohesive visual identity and executing hands-on design work.
Summary Generated by Built In

Puck is hiring a Creative Director to partner with Air Mail and Puck designers to define how Puck looks, feels, and behaves across every touchpoint—digital, editorial, experiential, retail, and beyond. In the wake of the Air Mail acquisition and integration, this is a rare moment to thoughtfully reimagine our full brand ecosystem. This is a hands-on creative leadership role with a wide mandate and a high bar for the craft. The ideal candidate is a senior designer or art director ready to step into a broader brand leadership position—someone who can think holistically about brand systems and experience design while also rolling up their sleeves to execute layouts, refine templates, and art direct visuals.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to examine what’s most compelling across Puck and AirMail and synthesize those strengths into a unified creative system that carries the combined organization forward into its next era.

This role is primarily based out of Puck’s New York City headquarters. Remote candidates will not be considered.

Primary Responsibilities:

Brand Design
  • Shape and maintain a cohesive brand and design system for Puck across all touchpoints: digital, editorial, marketing, retail, and events.
  • Build visual standards and frameworks that elevate Puck’s identity in a way that is modern, premium, and consistent across channels.
Editorial & Publication Design
  • Lead the visual expression of Puck’s editorial products, including weekly, daily, and special editorial packages through the application of Puck’s refined editorial sensibility.
  • Contribute hands-on design work for layouts, typography, art direction, special features, and recurring editorial formats.
Brand Integrations & Evolution
  • Shape a modernized design language that thoughtfully incorporates elements from both Puck and AirMail’s existing style guides and ensures that legacy brand elements are honored while creating room for innovation and evolution.
Retail & Experiential Brand Expression
  • Concept seasonal, editorially inspired, and partner-focused retail activations connected to the AirMail retail presence and future Puck brand moments.
  • Source and manage vendors who can bring physical brand concepts—pop-ups, in-store experiences, merchandising cues—to life with craft and efficiency.
Marketing, Campaigns, and Events
  • Develop creative for events, experiential moments, and digital marketing to support subscriber growth, brand storytelling, and cross-portfolio promotion.
CreativeOps & Collaboration
  • Work closely with a small internal design team and manage external freelancers and creative partners.
  • Contribute to efficient creative processes and healthy cross-functional collaboration.
Foster a culture of craft, curiosity, editorial sensitivity, and high standards.

To best perform this job, you will demonstrate:

  • Strong hands-on design skills across digital, print, experiential, and campaign work.
  • Experience developing or extending brands into physical spaces, retail, or experiential contexts.
  • Familiarity with UX/UI principles, though not as a primary discipline.
  • A passion for editorial craft, culture, storytelling, and premium brand expression.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 8–10+ years of design or creative experience in editorial, digital media, premium consumer brands, experiential/retail, or subscription businesses.
  • A portfolio demonstrating excellence in editorial design, typography, brand systems, and visual storytelling.
  • Deep understanding and passion for Puck and Air Mail’s mission and our content
  • Experience directing freelancers, illustrators, photographers, or small creative teams.
The ability to move fluidly between conceptual thinking and execution.

Salary, Perks & Benefits:

  • Flexible PTO, in addition to company holidays
  • Company-sponsored health, dental, vision and 401K plans
  • Company equity
  • Endless development opportunities at a fast-growing startup
  • The base salary range for this position is $185,000 - $200,000. Final title and compensation will ultimately be based on the candidate's location, skill level and experience.

About Puck:

At Puck, we believe that journalists are society’s original influencers. Yet the digital media economy of the last decade created an insurmountable rift between journalists and their followings. Puck exists to change that; we want to return power back to journalists by creating a media platform owned and operated by the journalists themselves. Puck is a news brand dedicated to the inside story, hyper-focused on the four power corners of American culture: Wall Street, Silicon Valley, Washington, and Hollywood. We are focused on the “last mile” of news - what the insiders are really saying.

Puck was founded by media industry veterans and a handful of entrepreneurial journalists. We launched in September 2021 and have been featured in The New York Times, Axios, Bloomberg, and other leading publications. We most recently raised a Series B with TPG Growth, Standard Investments, and J Rothschild Capital Management. We are headquartered in Manhattan with a nationally distributed workforce.
