The Counsel position is an integral part of Delta Dental's legal team, supporting critical company initiatives in a collaborative team environment. As an attorney in the Legal department, this role protects the company's interests by gathering information, identifying/ evaluating options, preparing legal positions, providing counsel, and advising leadership on recommended courses of action.
This Counsel position focuses on supporting Technology, Cybersecurity, and AI Governance at the intersection of the law, business, and emerging technology in the health care and insurance industry. The ideal candidate leverages legal expertise to enable digital transformation and mitigate risks while ensuring regulatory compliance. This role requires a blend of legal expertise in SaaS contracts, practical knowledge of cybersecurity frameworks, and a forward-thinking understanding of artificial intelligence governance.
Responsibilities- Provide legal advice and assistance to enable the company to maximize/grow business and promote corporate values in accordance with local/state/federal laws.
- Research, analyze, and keep current on laws, regulations, and court decisions affecting the company and the industry as a whole. Experience and knowledgeable about cybersecurity, data privacy compliance, incident response, HIPAA regulations and AI governance.
- Empower business solutioning that avoids legal challenges and compliance issues.
- Develop, review, and negotiate contracts, including but not limited to technology transactions such as SaaS agreements, cloud services, software licensing, vendor agreements, and AI related procurement.
- Leverage legal expertise to execute projects and initiatives under the direction of a practice group leader or other functional leadership.
- As needed, escalate complex questions of legal interpretation or risk to practice group leaders or more senior counsels to explore legal solutions

Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree and active bar membership in good standing
Additional Experience
- 3+ years of legal experience in a regulatory or transactions oriented role at a law firm or an in-house environment with law degree; Healthcare or benefits experience preferred.
- Certifications (Preferred): CIPP/US, CISSP (Security), or AI Governance certifications (e.g., IAPP AIGP).

The national base pay range at the end is a good-faith estimate of what Delta Dental may pay for new hires. Actual pay may vary based on Delta Dental’s assessment of the candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, certifications and ability to meet required minimum job qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include prevailing wages in the work location and internal equity.
