About Opendoor
At Opendoor our mission is to tilt the world in favor of homeowners and those who aim to become one. Homeownership matters. It's how people build wealth, stability, and community. It's how families put down roots, how neighborhoods strengthen, how the future gets built. We're building the modern system of homeownership giving people the freedom to buy and sell on their own terms. We’ve built an end-to-end online experience that has already helped thousands of people and we’re just getting started.
Opendoor's Corporate Legal team is seeking an experienced contracts professional to join as Counsel, Commercial and help scale a modern, business-minded contracting function at a public company reinventing the real estate industry. This is a high-impact/visibility role supporting a growing commercial contracting function with increasing deal volume, cross-functional partnership, and regular visibility with business leaders.
The commercial work spans a mix of SaaS and technology, professional services, data and privacy-related terms, and a range of business partnerships that support our operations. You'll draft and negotiate standard agreements directly with counterparties, help counsel move more complex deals quickly by surfacing key issues and context, and partner closely with Procurement, Finance, and Security to help the business move quickly while managing risk thoughtfully.
In addition to deal support, you'll help improve how contracts move through the company, making intake smoother, records easier to find, templates and playbooks easier to use, and post-signature tracking more reliable. This role is ideal for someone who combines strong commercial judgment with a practical, service-oriented approach and an interest in improving processes and commercial relationships over time.
This role reports to the Head of Corporate Legal and may be based in any of our U.S. offices (Miami, San Francisco, Seattle, or Tempe) or in our Toronto, Canada office. The team primarily collaborates during Pacific Time business hours. This is an in-person role and candidates must be based within a 50-mile commuting distance of an Opendoor office and able to be physically present in the office 4 days a week.

- Draft, review, and negotiate routine commercial agreements using established templates and playbook guidance, such as NDAs, order forms, SOWs, work orders, renewals, and amendments.
- Identify and escalate non-standard or higher-risk issues to counsel when appropriate.
- Support more complex transactions by summarizing key terms, highlighting deviations from baseline positions, and keeping reviews efficient.
- Expand into additional contract types and deal categories over time as you build familiarity with Opendoor's business and risk posture.
Partner with the Business to Keep Work Moving
- Serve as a first point of contact for commercial contract requests, helping business partners provide the information needed to start work quickly.
- Partner closely with Procurement to support a consistent, business-friendly contracting experience.
- Maintain clear visibility into status and priorities so stakeholders know what's in progress and what's needed to move forward.
- Help Legal, Procurement, and Finance stay aligned on contracting activity, status, and vendor records.
Support Post-Signature Tracking and Supplier Governance
- Help maintain renewal and notice-date tracking in partnership with Procurement.
- Assist with post-signature review and follow-through on negotiated commitments, such as key service levels, security and data terms, insurance, and audit and reporting rights, coordinating with cross-functional partners as needed.
- Support periodic supplier reviews by helping surface upcoming renewals, contract commitments, and potential gaps.
- Maintain the contract repository so executed agreements are complete, organized, and easy to locate
Improve Templates, Playbooks, and Tools
- Maintain and improve contract templates and clause libraries in partnership with counsel, including keeping core details accurate such as entity names and signature blocks.
- Contribute to the buildout and refinement of negotiation playbooks, including standard positions and fallbacks.
- Pilot and refine automation and AI-enabled workflows that support practical contracting work, for example first-pass review, comparing drafts to playbook guidance, summarizing issues, and extracting key obligations.
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school with active Bar membership in good standing (or eligible to register as Registered In-House Counsel). California Bar preferred.
- Experience supporting commercial contracting in-house or at a law firm (contracts manager, commercial paralegal, contract administrator, or similar).
- Demonstrated ability to independently drive routine agreements to completion, with strong judgment about when to escalate.
- Experience supporting contracting workflows such as intake and triage, stakeholder communication, and basic reporting or tracking.
- Experience with renewals, notice deadlines, and post-signature obligation tracking.
- Working familiarity with common commercial terms, especially in SaaS and services, including privacy and security concepts such as DPAs, security exhibits, and data use and retention, and IP and license scope.
- Comfort partnering cross-functionally with Procurement, Finance, and Security, and working effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong attention to detail, clear written communication, and a practical, solutions-oriented approach.
- Curiosity and comfort experimenting with AI tools to improve day-to-day work.
