The Associate Counsel operates within broad guidelines established by the Senior Vice President & General Counsel, and the Vice President & Deputy General Counsel; the incumbent is responsible for providing legal expertise and assistance to the organization.
What You Will Do:
- Participates in the development and interpretation of ABS policies.
- May provide direction and instruction to support staff, review their progress and make recommendations concerning the evaluation of their work.
- At the direction of the Senior Vice President & General Counsel, the Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, and the Associate General Counsel, conducts legal projects and research
- Provides counsel and advice on a variety of legal matters, including employment and labor, intellectual property, data privacy, insurance, litigation, and bankruptcy matters.
- Drafts, reviews, and negotiates contracts and other legal documents.
- Author’s correspondence, legal memoranda, and reports
- Under supervision, works with outside legal counsel in various legal matters.
- Anticipate and identify legal issues and proactively develop effective and practical legal strategies and solutions.
What You Will Need:
Education and Experience
- L.L.B. or J.D. in Jurisprudence
- Typically requires 2 - 6 years of experience
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Legal interest in the marine industry.
- The ability to negotiate detailed, sensitive legal issues with clients and other interested parties.
- The human relations skills necessary to organize and manage the activities of support staff.
- Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management System (Applicable to internal candidates only.)
