Job Description 

Title:  Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

Reports to: Director of Therapy Services

Position Summary: 

Helps occupational therapy clients by providing rehabilitative services, under the direction of occupational therapists, to persons with mental, physical, emotional, or developmental impairments.
 

Core Responsibilities:

  • Verifies client information by interviewing client; reviewing and/or recording medical history; confirming purpose of treatment.

  • Helps clients improve their quality of life by helping them compensate for limitations, such as, helping injured workers improve their motor skills and re-enter the labor force, and teaching persons with learning disabilities to prepare meals or to use public transportation and increase their independence,

  • Follows treatment plan developed in collaboration with occupational therapist by teaching techniques, such as, the proper method of moving from a bed into a wheelchair, and the best ways to stretch and limber muscles; monitoring activities to make sure they are performed correctly; providing encouragement, bringing treatment that is not having the intended effect to the attention of the therapist

  • Maintains patient occupational therapy records by recording client's progress for use by the occupational therapist.

  • Generates revenues by recording billing information of services rendered.

  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations.

  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.

  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.

  • Serves and protects the occupational therapy practice by adhering to professional standards, policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) standards.

  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.

  • Enhances occupational therapy practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

  • Other duties as requested or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Completion of approved OTA training program

  • Current State of Michigan Occupational Therapy Assistant License

Skills Required

  • Completion of an approved Occupational Therapy Assistant training program
  • Current Michigan Occupational Therapy Assistant license

Description What are long-term acute care hospitals? Long-term acute care hospitals (LTACHs) are facilities that specialize in the treatment of patients with serious medical conditions that require care on an ongoing basis but no longer require intensive care or extensive diagnostic procedures. These patients are typically discharged from the intensive care units and require more care than they can receive in a rehabilitation center, skilled nursing facility, or at home. Where are LTACHs located? LTACHs often are housed within the walls of an acute care hospital but function independently. LTACHs must be licensed independently and have their own governing body. LTACHs may also exist as a stand-alone facility. What are the benefits of LTACHs? Because LTACHs are able to focus their energy and resources at a limited number of specialized treatments with minimal overhead, they are able to provide more cost-effective care than if these same patients were kept in acute care facilities. What types of patients are seen in LTACHs? Under Medicare, the patient must need more than 25 days of hospitalization. The average length of stay of a person in an LTACH is approximately 30 days. The types of patients typically seen in LTACHs include those requiring: ■ Prolonged ventilator use or weaning ■ Ongoing dialysis for chronic renal failure ■ Intensive respiratory care ■ Multiple IV medications or transfusions ■ Complex wound care/care for burns
