Description of Work

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

This position is assigned to Pasquotank Correctional Institution, a large male close and minimum custody correctional facility. Position will be assigned to a housing unit in the custody area. Effective verbal/written communication with other staff, inmates, and the general public. Be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons. Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent/verbally abusive. Conduct continuous visual/audio surveillance of

assigned work area. Accurately operate office machines/prepare written reports/forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources. Demonstrate/instruct inmates in the proper safe use of tools, equipment/supplies. Review, analyze/evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interview/documentation/ personal observation. Perform crisis intervention/routine counseling to include suicide prevention. Account for supplies/equipment. Implement /manage correctional programs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences:

Salary Range: $37,377 - $65,408

Documented knowledge of supportive counseling techniques.

Necessary Special Qualifications: MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.

The salary grade for this position is NC07.  State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position.  If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.  Based upon these factors, a pay increase May result.

About the Division of Institutions:

The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina. Facilities are categorized by custody levels (minimum, medium, close) and house individuals serving sentences for felony convictions. The division provides safety, security, and rehabilitative services through trained custody staff, program facilitators, and administrative personnel.
