The Role

Job Summary

The Corporate Sustainability Program Specialist reports to the Director of Corporate Sustainability and supports, facilitates, and promotes sustainability efforts within and outside of MAA. This role collaborates with internal teams to drive and enhance MAA’s impact within people engagement, portfolio resiliency, and stakeholder commitment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program Coordination and Strategic Support

  • Coordinates key processes and continuously supports the MAA Corporate Sustainability program.

  • Collaborates with internal teams in the augmentation and execution of sustainability-focused strategies.

  • Aids in the development and delivery of external communications, including newsletters, websites, and social media content.

  • Assists with drafting internal policies that reflect MAA’s stance on material corporate sustainability topics.

  • Coordinate and participates in corporate sustainability and disclosure committee meetings and related agenda items.

Reporting, Data Analysis, and Communications

  • Facilitates and coordinates data collection and analysis of sustainability performance metrics.

  • Coordinates the completion of key rater and ranker (R&R) disclosures including GRESB, CDP, MSCI, Sustainalytics, ISS, S&P Global (DJSI), and Refinitiv by assembling supporting documentation, drafting data requests, and managing project trackers.

  • Maintains communication with R&R contacts, tracks methodology updates, and supports internal stakeholders with materials for investor engagement.

  • Facilitates the development of key sustainability-related materials to highlight MAA’s commitment to corporate sustainability (e.g., corporate sustainability report, sustainability-related publications, award submissions).

  • Monitors municipal sustainability compliance and bench marking mandates across the MAA portfolio.

Project and Initiative Implementation

  • Supports sustainability-related initiatives (e.g., electric vehicle charging, property resource optimization, renewable energy infrastructure).

  • Supports the implementation of programming to enhance sustainability awareness and engagement within MAA and the broader local communities.

  • Organizes, supports, and promotes MAA's community engagement and employee volunteer programs.

  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the business.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, business, or a related field required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 2 years of experience with corporate sustainability/responsibility, communications, community engagement or a related field required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the construction, architecture, REIT, multifamily housing, and engineering industry preferred

  • Master's degree in sustainability, business, or a related field preferred

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite tools preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of corporate sustainability principles and practices

  • Professional written and verbal communication skills with the capability to create and deliver organized and professional content

  • Organizational skills and flexibility to operate within a dynamic, deadline-driven environment

  • Interpersonal skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders

  • Ability to manage multiple projects independently

  • Initiative and willingness to work on ad-hoc projects and responsibilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of applications (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint) and advanced proficiency with Excel

  • Process management skills and attention to detail to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

  • This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds.

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
