Duties & Responsibilities 


Great Hearts is seeking a Corporate Staff Accountant to join its dynamic and growing team.  The Staff Accountant is responsible for the general accounting and financial reporting functions at the home office and is the initial liaison between the home office and the schools.  The right candidate will be detailed oriented with strong work ethic and excellent communication skills. 

Primary responsibilities include: 

  • Maintain the general ledgers and complete monthly close for the home office, including preparing and processing journal entries, reconciling accounts and reviewing cash transactions, expenditure charges and transfers. Coordinate with finance/accounting staff located at all states that maintain a GreatHearts presence. 
  • Accurately process payroll entry after each bi-weekly payroll including program codes to ensure accurate reporting 
  • Entering credit cards for home office employees and ensuring card holders comply with the business expense policy. Confirming coding, approvals and all pertinent information is included in the download into the accounting system. 
  • Assist with annual financial audits including schedule preparation and interaction with auditors  
  • Monitor cash balances at home office 
  • Create and process bank cash transfers between the main operating account and the various school accounts.  Create and process other bank cash transfers as needed. 
  • Provide financial reports and schedules to various parts of the Great Hearts Organization 
  • Provide excellent customer service; respond to inquiries and research questions as they arise 
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and policies and procedures 
  • Monitor and assist with grant compliance and reporting  
  • Ensure accounting practices comply with generally accepted accounting principles 
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Qualifications, Competencies and Strengths

While experience in education is not a requirement, Great Hearts is seeking people who are passionate and committed to K-12 education reform. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field required 
  • Experience in school finance desired 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build strong relationships 
  • Detailed oriented with strong organization and time management skills  
  • Demonstrated professionalism and responsible enough to take ownership of projects 
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Products such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint; Blackbaud Financial Edge:  Adaptive and/or SAP Concur systems experience a plus  
  • Ability to work in fast paced, dynamic environment with minimal supervision and multiple deadlines
