This position is responsible for managing the complete accounting cycle for our real estate portfolio of 15 entities. The position will coordinate, complete, and oversee all accounting activities from initial journal entry recording through month-end close procedures, financial statement review, and account reconciliation. This role provides oversight and direction to one direct report.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the full accounting process for 15 real estate entities, including recording journal entries, reconciling accounts, and overseeing month-end and year-end close procedures.
  • Review and approve all financial statements prepared for assigned entities to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Prepare and maintain comprehensive account reconciliations, identifying and resolving discrepancies through extensive research and advanced problem-solving techniques.
  • Supervise and provide oversight of one direct report, including training, performance review, and delegation of accounting activities and reconciliations.
  • Lead coordination with external organizations and internal departments on accounting issues, project initiatives, and general ledger matters related to real estate properties and entities.
  • Monitor and implement new accounting guidance and regulatory requirements as applicable to real estate accounting and Company operations.
  • Analyze real estate accounting operations and processes, identifying and communicating continuous process improvement opportunities to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Manage stakeholder expectations through consistent, timely communication and project updates on accounting initiatives and close timelines.
  • Support ad hoc accounting projects, reporting requests, and special analyses as assigned.

Annual compensation range for this role is $70,000 - $80,000 depending on experience.


This position offers a hybrid work option. Nelnet values flexibility and understands the importance of work-life integration. Our hybrid work environment allows associates living within 30 miles of an office location to work remotely for part of the week, while also fostering collaboration and team connection through in-office presence three days per week.

EDUCATION:

4-year degree in accounting


EXPERIENCE:

3+ years of accounting experience or 1+ years of public accounting experience


COMPETENCIES – SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and Outlook. Ability to create Excel documents using a variety of formulas and Excel tools.
  • Strong accountability for work: timely completion of tasks, working with manager to develop and achieve position goals, communication of task/project delays.
  • High standards for productivity with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving ability. Initiative to troubleshoot problems independently.
  • Demonstrate sound judgement by taking appropriate actions regarding questionable findings or concerns.
  • Ability to work with a team or independently with initiative and appropriate supervision.
  • Confident oral and written communication skills. Effectively communicates with and engages all levels of the organization from peers to executive management both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Mastery of complex accounting concepts and strong knowledge of GAAP and specialized accounting concepts like revenue recognition and consolidation accounting.
