Cornerstone Group Leader
Founded in 1981, NIA Community Services Network is a nonprofit organization dedicated to addressing issues that impact youth, families, and seniors. NIA’s mission, to strengthen and empower children, families, and communities through comprehensive programming and vital human services, is evidenced each day through programming that directly supports and enriches the lives of children and families we serve at nearly 50 sites located across many of New York City's most diverse and underserved neighborhoods through after-school programs, summer day camps, cultural arts opportunities, youth and family counseling services, parent workshops, community assistance, referral services, senior support programs, and community events.

Cornerstone Programs are located in NYCHA community centers throughout New York City and provide academic and recreational opportunities for children, teens and adults. The center offers services every weekday from 10:00am to 10:00pm, Saturdays from 10:00am to 5:00pm, and during extended hours during the summer and on school holidays.
The Group Leader is responsible for providing direct service to program participants of all ages, including children, teens, adults, and seniors. Group Leaders will supervise and facilitate simple scheduled activities, such as BINGO, game rooms, study hall, weight room, gym, and various other recreational activities and special events.
Responsibilities:
- Safely and attentively supervise assigned group.
- Coordinate, supervise, and facilitate scheduled program activities as assigned, including snack times, off-site field trips, special events, and transitions as needed.
- Take daily attendance, log accidents/incidents.
- Ensure the safe dismissal of youth participants.
- Act as a positive role model to youth participants and promote team-building and respect for self and others.
- Communicate and interact with participants of all ages in a professional, welcoming, and appropriate manner.
- Intervene, mediate, and problem-solve where potential conflict arises with participants; alert on-site supervisor of any emergencies.
- Maintain a safe environment for participants.
- Work collaboratively with co-workers and cooperatively with supervisors.
- Participate in meetings and professional development sessions as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the success and smooth operation of the Cornerstone program.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Experience in youth development and community work is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Coney Island community, NYCHA housing developments, DOE and youth programming, and DYCD programming is preferred.
- Must be punctual and reliable; Must be available to maintain a full-time work schedule, within the operating hours of the Cornerstone program, including weekend and evening coverage as needed.
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred.
- Must successfully complete NYC DOH Fingerprinting Screening; New York State Register Clearance
Skills Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in youth development and community work
- Familiarity with Coney Island community and NYCHA housing developments
- CPR/First Aid certification
