A VIP (Very Important Person) is a volunteer or docent who is brought on as part of the Great Basin Institute (GBI) Galena Creek Visitor Center team, on temporary or semi-permanent assignment and may commit to 16 hours (more are permitted) or as few as 4 hours per week.

Essential Job Functions

The volunteer will serve the Galena Creek Visitor Center and its visitors through completion of the following duties

  1. Provide interpretive services to members of the local community and visitors;
  2. Assist with coordination, preparation and presentation of interpretive programming;
  3. Visitor communication and outreach;
  4. Guide tours and lead interpretive programs;
  5. Perform site maintenance;
  6. Assist with conception, drafting, and preparing field trips and environmental camps;
  7. Help to oversee gift shop operations;
  8. Help with special events, including security and set-up/tear-down;
  9. Other duties may be assigned, or developed, based on the volunteer’s interests, capacity, and site needs.

    1. Strong working knowledge of Google and MS Office
    2. Excellent active listening, public speaking, and presentation skills; great communicator and comfortable working with diverse populations
    3. Comfortable being in hectic environments and able to multitask

  1. Education: While there is no minimum education required to be a volunteer, the volunteer must provide proof of the above listed knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  1. Experience: Applicants will have experience in many or all of the above listed duties and have a high level of experience in many or all of the knowledge, skills, and abilities.

 

LOCATION

This position is located in the Galena Creek Visitor Center in the Galena Creek Recreation Area, located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, within U.S. Forest Service lands. This area is also shared land with the Washoe County Parks Department as Galena Creek Regional Park.

High desert, forest, river, wetland, mountain, and rangeland are all ecosystems you will find within our 450-acre park. The Great Basin Institute at Galena works in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space to encourage the understanding, appreciation, and wise-enjoyment of the many natural, cultural, and historical resources of the Galena Canyon Area and the Mount Rose Scenic Byway.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit for several hours, use hands, stand for several hours, walk for 1-2 hours, bend, and have specific vision abilities to include close and distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus working with a computer and other job/industry specific equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually low.


The overall nature of this position - mostly located indoors, however, occasionally located outdoors - is sedentary, requiring little physical effort and occasional light exertion. There is occasional exposure to environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and temperature changes.
