Job Title: Controls Automation Engineer
Location: 100% Remote (U.S.)
Position Type: Full-time, Direct W2
Salary Range: $100,000–$160,000 Annually
Experience Required: 10+ years

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Controls Automation Engineer with hands-on experience supporting automation systems in shop floor and manufacturing environments. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of PLC programming and controls, experience integrating PLCs with software applications and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), and the ability to troubleshoot and modify PLC logic to support production operations.

This role will work closely with manufacturing, controls, software, and engineering teams to maintain and improve automated production systems, resolve controls issues, and support manufacturing process improvements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, troubleshoot, and maintain industrial automation and control systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Support automation systems directly on the shop floor, including troubleshooting production equipment and controls-related issues.
  • Program, troubleshoot, modify, and update PLC logic based on production, equipment, and process requirements.
  • Integrate PLCs with software applications, databases, and other manufacturing systems.
  • Develop and maintain communication between PLC systems and MES platforms to enable production data exchange, equipment status, and process tracking.
  • Troubleshoot PLC communication, I/O, networking, and equipment integration issues.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and engineering teams to identify automation improvements and implement controls solutions.
  • Support commissioning, testing, debugging, and deployment of automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Analyze equipment faults and production issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain documentation for PLC programs, controls architecture, communication interfaces, and system changes.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment reliability, automation efficiency, and manufacturing throughput.
  • Follow manufacturing safety, quality, and change-control procedures when modifying automation systems.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • Hands-on experience working in manufacturing or shop floor environments.
  • Strong understanding of PLC programming, architecture, troubleshooting, and controls systems.
  • Experience integrating PLCs with software applications.
  • Experience connecting or integrating MES systems with PLCs.
  • Ability to read, troubleshoot, and update PLC logic.
  • Experience troubleshooting industrial automation equipment and controls systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with manufacturing, engineering, IT, and operations teams.
  • Willingness to work hands-on in a production environment and respond to equipment or automation issues.
