CONTROLLERS DIVISIONAL OVERVIEW

Controllers ensure that the firm meets all the financial control and reporting obligations of a global, regulated and public financial institution. In the Controllers Department, our professionals measure the profitability of, and risks associated with, every aspect of the firm’s business. Controllers also ensure that the firm’s activities are conducted in compliance with the regulations governing transactions in the financial markets. 

PRODUCT CONTROL – ASSET MANAGEMENT DIVISION – PRIVATE 

The successful candidate will join the Asset & Wealth Management (AWM) Private Product Control team, which is responsible for financial reporting, valuation oversight, and control functions for private equity strategies across the firm’s alternative investment platforms.

The role will support the valuation and independent price verification of illiquid private investments across various equity strategies, through analysis of valuation inputs, review of third‑party pricing, and preparation of valuation support for fair value reviews.

The candidate will work closely with cross‑functional teams including but not limited to Operations, Risk, Fund Accounting, Legal, Compliance, and Engineering to ensure accurate valuation, reporting, and controls, while supporting investor and regulatory reporting requirements.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITES 

  • Support day-to-day reporting and month-end / quarter-end closing processes for the team, such as:
  • Maintain books and records (PARA) of investment-related transactions (P&L, purchases and sales and valuation adjustments) and of supporting documentation including reconciliations to the firm’s general ledger. 
  • Handle P&L and balance sheet reporting, including coordination with financial reporting and divisional reporting teams to analyze key drivers/trends in business performance.
  • Perform the submission of information used in the firm’s external footnote disclosures and regulatory filings related to AWM’s alternative investment business.
  • Respond to ad-hoc requests from various divisions and departments across the firm.
  • Participate in teamwide and firmwide strategic initiatives focused on process improvement and automation to drive collaboration across stakeholders.
  • Perform illiquid equity valuation reviews across multiple alternative asset classes and strategies, including growth equity, private equity, infrastructure equity, and other equity strategies.
  • Prepare valuation materials and sensitivity analyses, including presentations to senior stakeholders in Controllers and AWM.
  • Apply various valuation approaches in analysis including Market approach (public comps, precedent transactions, index proxies), Income approach (DCF, scenario‑based analyses), Net asset value and hybrid methodologies, where applicable.
  • Conduct independent price verification (IPV) and reasonableness assessments, including review of third‑party valuation materials, internal deal team assumptions, and market‑driven benchmarks
  • Perform deal‑related reviews by leading coordination efforts with AWM Finance, Accounting Policy, Regulatory Policy, Legal, Tax, ACMS other control functions to assess accounting treatment, valuation considerations, and disclosure impacts at the Golman group level. 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience
  • Bachelors Degree (Accounting, Economics or Finance degree preferred)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • CPA or CFA preferred, but not required
  • Strong quantitative, analytical and organizational skills
  • Prior experience performing illiquid valuation analysis is preferred. Experience in relevant roles is a plus.
  • Prior experience with private equity or alternative investment products is preferred
  • Public and/or Private accounting experience preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skill: the ability to clearly articulate ideas and interact with various teams across the firm
  • Highly motivated and adaptable: the ability to work on a global team of diverse individuals
  • Proactive: the ability to respond creatively and quickly in a fast-paced, high-pressure, changing environment
  • Accurate and detail-oriented with sound judgment and integrity
  • Keen interest in financial markets
  • Knowledge of desktop applications (Excel, IgnitePad, PowerPoint)

Salary Range
The expected base salary for this New York, New York, United States-based position is $85000-$140000. In addition, you may be eligible for a discretionary bonus if you are an active employee as of fiscal year-end.
