The GAF Business Systems Specialist (Level I) is responsible for supporting the implementation and integration of continuous improvement in the plant operations at a specific plant along with participation in initiatives with commercial plants across the GAF network.

This key role is accountable for promoting a culture of continuous improvement and efficiencies across the plant’s products, systems, operations and processes. This position reports directly to the General Manager with a dotted line to the Sr. Director GAF Business Systems Commercial. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of lean and/or six sigma with the ability to assist in coaching, training and driving these projects within the plant.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in leading the implementation of lean principles to drive results (Safety, Quality, Customer Delivery, Cost Management) in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • This is a key role for helping and influencing change by implementing lean manufacturing methods through influence, facilitation, coaching, and mentoring the production and support teams (without any direct authority).
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by engaging people in improving the business.
  • Developing the site team through hands-on improvement projects combined with relevant training in all manufacturing, support, and administrative functions.
  • Measure and report progress to the site team and Plant Manager. Ensuring that improvement projects and training are consistent with GAF Business Systems standards and sustained over time. Advertising the plant team’s successes to upper management and ensuring credit is given at the lowest level possible in the organization.
  • Conduct gap assessments and ensure conformance to requirements of GAF Business Systems Standards.
  • Ensures consistent implementation of quality improvements and actively promotes Continuous Improvement.
  • Presents, facilitates and leads assigned process improvement events (Kaizen)
  • Train and develop staff competencies in basic and advanced problem solving methodologies
  • Collaborate with cross-organizational manufacturing management teams to ensure appropriate participation and support.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to climb ladders and/or stairs and walk on open grating on elevated surfaces
  • Frequent sitting, walking, and standing, and occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and balancing
  • Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enabling the use of office machinery
  • Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as the telephone
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
  • Occasionally operate business machines
  • Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds

  • A high school diploma or equivalent minimum
  • Demonstrated leadership, organizational and follow-up skills
  • Strong problem solving, team building, planning and decision making skills.
  • Influences others through informal leadership, teaching, and hands-on demonstrations of Lean principles and practices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Positive influencing, encouraging, and motivating others to get results
  • Proficient in Google Sheets, Slides, etc.
  • Ability to work independently, manage through others and maintain schedules and deadlines
  • Ability to travel 10%

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of quality systems (data management, lab/test equipment calibration management, sampling and test plans, nonconformance/disposition, supplier management, CAPA, auditing) is preferred.
  • Associate Degree preferred
  • Work in a GAF plant for at least a year is a plus
  • Experience in implementing continuous improvements and improvement systems is a plus
  • Effective presentation and group facilitation skills.
  • Experience in supporting logistics, supply chain and 3rd party outsourcing and application of industrial systems management (IE methods) are a plus.
