We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technical Writer at UL Research Institutes.
The Senior Technical Writer works closely with researchers and engineers of the Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), a UL Research Institute (ULRI), to translate research-driven insights into vital resources for consumption by technical and non-technical audiences. The Senior Technical Writer works closely with colleagues across the organization on to draft, edit and advise on structure, content, and format of technical documents to advance the mission of the research organization.

What you'll learn & achieve:
As the Senior Technical Writer, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:
  • Lead content gathering, analyzing, and translating complex technical information into communications that are engaging and understood by users at various technical levels.
  • Lead content development, writing, and editing written materials for publications, internet, strategic initiatives, user manuals, functional descriptions, training materials, installation guides, white papers, reports, FAQs, technical overviews, and other stakeholder-facing documentation and deliverables as assigned.
  • Organize materials and adhere to (or in some cases create) established standards regarding order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology.
  • Provide technical writing support and review documents for technical accuracy.
  • Conduct research to ensure the use of proper technical terminology.
  • Select photography, video, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate material.
  • Support content creation and management on networks and web platforms (i.e. Social Media).
  • Champion writing projects from outline to completion, ensuring proper subject matter expert or stakeholder input.
  • Contribute to literature reviews or other forms of secondary research.
  • Gather feedback on documentation to improve usability.
  • Edit for consistency in documentation across the organization.

  • Mastery of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of researching, interpreting, and translating highly technical information data for a variety of audiences.
  • Thorough understanding of how to create and nuance different types of technical publications for different use cases (i.e. manuals, support guides, reports, articles, presentations, etc.).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in shepherding content through its lifecycle - from developing an outline through the final published work, including citation best practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent writing and grammatical skills.
  • Excellent proofreading skills.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to present complex data in clear, concise text.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and to work independently.
  • Ability to manage projects and gain consensus among team members to drive projects forward.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software; HTML/drupal experience desirable.
  • Proficiency with LaTeX and Github preferred, but not required.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Technical Writing, or related field.
  • Minimum of eight years' experience technical writing.
  • Experience with fire protection or research organization writing, preferred.
  • Experience utilizing publishing software a plus.
  • Certified Professional Technical Communicator preferred, but not required.
