Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking an experienced, visionary editor to oversee a Features staff of nearly 100 journalists charged with covering the culture. This leader's mission is to drive our reporting on the arts, the entertainment industry and the media; shape our approach to providing advice and criticism that serves our readers as they choose how to spend their time; and cultivate some of our most innovative and powerful storytelling.

Perhaps no department at The Post offers the richness and range of Features: Pulitzer-winning critics, powerhouse columnists and brand-name reporters populate a staff known for wit, energy and voice. These journalists are risk takers eager to experiment with form and style to push the boundaries of our craft as we find new ways to captivate readers, viewers and listeners.

The ideal candidate is a confident editor and strong manager who can lead Features into a new era where The Post's outstanding coverage of culture's impact on the way we live draws large, loyal, engaged audiences. A commitment to innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit will be essential, as will experience in attracting top talent and launching new beats, teams and initiatives.

This editor must be a fresh thinker who understands how to craft Magazine and Style stories that delight, surprise and provoke; cultivate lifestyle coverage that is accessible and engaging; drive coverage of the biggest breaking news in pop culture; and prioritize visual journalism in making all these stories resonate. This leader must think constantly about ways to attract new audiences - and promote that mindset across the department.

The Post's mission of scrutinizing power and empowering people is central to this department, whose journalists deconstruct power across spheres of culture ranging from politics to Hollywood celebrity, hold cultural institutions to account and provide people with information they need every day.

As we do in filling all our leadership positions, we are seeking an individual with competitive zeal, a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an empathetic, collaborative approach to management.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom and it is not eligible for remote work.

Interested applicants should submit a resume and a three-page cover letter to our jobs portal by March 25 outlining their vision for the role to Managing Editor Krissah Thompson, to whom this position will report. All application materials can be uploaded to the same field.
