Desmos Classroom, a division of Amplify Education, is on a mission to help every student learn math and love learning math. Tens of millions of students and teachers around the world enjoy our free tools and activities, as well as our Common Core, standards-aligned math curriculum, which blends both paper and digital tasks to support social classrooms, invite mathematical creativity, and provoke wonder.
We are looking for a copy editor who loves working across many different teams (e.g., curriculum, marketing, product) to review and improve the clarity of our copy as well as perform quality assurance checks in a production editor capacity to ensure a delightful and cohesive user experience across our content. You'll join the copy editing team in being the final eyes on our lessons before we release and on various other content before they are published. You'll also join our curriculum team in the work of learning about systemic inequity in education, and identifying and attending to the needs of marginalized and excluded communities in order to build engaging and effective lessons that support all students.
This role is a great fit for you if you enjoy fine tuning the details and you are an advocate for using language that is elegant, concise, and easy to understand.
Basic Qualifications:

  • Editing expertise in either print or digital media.
  • Ability to apply established style guidelines consistently.
  • Ability to work across a variety of styles and types of content.
  • Ability to work with different authors and edit for different audiences.
  • Familiarity with using a content management platform, Google docs, and Adobe.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of professional editing experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in English Language Arts or similar


On your first day, you should show up ready to:

  • Introduce yourself on Slack to your new co-workers!
  • Offer your favorite tips on how to avoid common grammatical errors.
  • Read our style guide and offer any feedback you have on how it can be improved.


What you'll learn more about after you're hired:

  • Our philosophies for technology, design, pedagogy, and equity.
  • Our voice and style and how that serves students and teachers.
  • The unique features of the curriculum we're building.
  • How to use the Desmos Activity Builder (our content management platform).
  • Our workflow for developing a new unit of lessons, from initial brainstorming all the way to final release.
  • The processes and tools we use to organize our work.


Within your first month you'll:

  • Collaborate with our copy editor in editing existing and/or new lessons to make the language clearer and more concise.
  • Collaborate with our copy editor in reviewing and improving marketing emails and resources.
  • Get your feet wet in brainstorming UX copy with our copy editor and product engineers.
  • Be able to navigate teacher.desmos.com, the Activity Builder, and our Google Drive folders with confidence.
  • Work with our copy editor in maintaining our style guides, making improvements when necessary.


Within your first three months you'll:

  • Be very familiar with the content of our style guide.
  • Be the final eyes on our Desmos lessons, independently copy editing, polishing the layout, and performing quality assurance checks before we release.
  • Own your own copy editing projects!
  • Identity areas where our language, formatting, or workflows could be improved and share your feedback with the team.


Within your first year you'll:

  • Impress everyone with your sharp editing skills!
  • Be a leading contributor in shaping the voice, tone, and style of our copy across Desmos Classroom.
  • Participate in a classroom visit (virtually, if necessary) to watch students learning from one of the lessons you helped develop!
