Job Description:

Position Summary:

We are seeking a strong storyteller and collaborative team player to join our Communications team. This role is responsible for developing compelling, meaningful content that brings the stories of Scottish Rite for Children to life across print and digital platforms. The ideal candidate is a curious, thoughtful writer who can identify a great story, build relationships with a variety of people and effectively manage projects from ideation to completion while balancing multiple priorities and deadlines. This role is an opportunity to create content that helps bring to life Scottish Rite’s mission — giving children back their childhood.

Duties/ResponsibilitiesWriting and Publications
  • Write compelling, accurate content for Scottish Rite for Children publications, including Rite Up, the annual Progress Report and other print and digital publications.

  • Write a range of content, from quick-turn assignments to in-depth, long-form stories, adapting writing style and approach based on the audience, platform and project needs.

  • Own assigned stories from concept through completion, including identifying and interviewing patients, families, medical staff and other sources

  • Research and develop story ideas that highlight patient experiences, clinical expertise, research, programs and organizational priorities.

  • Participate in publication and content planning meetings and collaborate with Communications team members to develop content and meet production deadlines.

  • Write and edit content for donor and organizational communications, including e-newsletters, campaigns and other recurring communications.

  • Proofread and edit content for grammar, accuracy, clarity, AP style and Scottish Rite writing and brand standards.

  • Ensure patient stories and related content comply with HIPAA requirements, media authorization policies and organizational privacy standards.

Digital Content
  • Write original articles and blogs for the Scottish Rite website.

  • Collaborate with digital, social media, email marketing and other Communications team members to identify opportunities to adapt and repurpose content across platforms.

  • Experience with content management systems (CMS) and an understanding of SEO, AI-driven search optimization and digital content best practices is a plus.

Organizational Writing and Editorial Support
  • Manage writing requests from departments across the organization, including articles, profiles, campaign content and other communications materials.

  • Write and edit award nominations and other submissions that showcase Scottish Rite staff, physicians, programs and accomplishments.

  • Support patient education materials through writing, editing and proofreading, as needed.

  • Serve as a writing and editing resource for Communications projects, helping ensure consistency in voice, style and messaging.

  • Review and edit content developed by external communications partners, as assigned, to ensure alignment with Scottish Rite brand and writing standards.

Campaign and Project Support
  • Develop copy for organizational campaigns, including fundraising and awareness initiatives such as Lend Our Hand.

  • Collaborate with designers, photographers, videographers and other team members to develop cohesive storytelling across written and visual content.

  • Coordinate and attend photo/video shoots associated with assigned stories and projects, as needed.

  • Manage multiple writing projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines and approval requirements.

Required Skills/Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, marketing or a related field preferred.

  • 5-8 years of professional writing, journalism, communications or related experience.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, proofreading and interviewing skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop compelling feature stories and translate complex information into clear, engaging content for a variety of audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to get to the heart of a story, as well as represent the subject with utmost integrity.

  • Strong knowledge of AP style and editorial best practices.

  • Ability to maintain organizational voice, tone and writing standards across multiple types of content.

  • Ability to interact effectively with patients and families, physicians, medical staff, organizational leaders and other stakeholders.

  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines simultaneously.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with writers, designers, photographers, videographers, digital and social media professionals.

  • Experience writing for both print and digital platforms.

  • Experience with content management systems (CMS), SEO and digital content best practices is a plus.

  • Excellent Microsoft Office and related computer skills required.

  • Previous experience in healthcare or healthcare/medical writing preferred.
