Position Summary:

The Conflicts Director of Lateral New Business is responsible for the overall management of the lateral conflict team’s workflow, processes, best practices, and clearances of new business.  This position works closely with the Chief Client Intake Officer, GC Office, Recruiting, firm attorneys, and other levels of firm administration to facilitate the timely and accurate intake of new business across the firm. 

Core Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversees and ensure consistent and efficient firmwide administration of lateral conflicts and new business clearances for lateral intake, including adherence to policies and procedures established by the Office of Firm Counsel and Senior Firm management concerning conflicts of interest identification, research and analysis, risk management, and lateral hiring due diligence practices.

  • Communicates effectively with internal clients in the lateral hiring process – including, but not limited to, Conflicts & Intake Management team, the local hiring teams and recruiting staff.

  • Oversees the intake, tracking, and clearance of annual summer associates and temporary attorney candidates.

  • Provides guidance and leadership to assigned team of Managers, Supervisors, Coordinators, and Analysts / Attorneys to accurately identify and facilitate the research and analysis required to identify potential conflicts of interest, business sensitivity and firm policy issues as it relates to the clearance of “book of work” for potential laterals submitted by all GT offices.

  • Works closely with the Office of Firm Counsel, Assistant General Counsels with escalated conflicts review of potential laterals portable and non-portable matters that require additional handling pertaining to potential business, conflicts, or firm policy issues.

  • Assists firmwide attorneys in the identification and resolution of conflicts of interest, business sensitivity and firm policy issues; documents, coordinates, and reviews receipt of client waivers and/or consents.

  • Consults the Chief Client Intake Officer, and other members of the firm’s management, as necessary, to receive guidance on the identification and resolution of conflicts of interest, business sensitivity issues, and firm policy issues.

  • Assists the Chief Client Intake Officer in connection with the development and implementation of conflicts and compliance related policies and procedures.

  • Assists the Chief Client Intake Officer in connection with the assessment of and improvement to, and development, testing and implementation of existing and new conflicts and compliance related technologies, processes, and procedures.

Team Management Responsibilities:

  • Manages, mentors, and coaches assigned team members.

  • Provide support to team members by establishing and maintaining cooperative and collaborative working relationships.

  • Oversees team assignments, reassignments, and monitor the progress and quality of work product generated by reporting team members.

  • Accesses the needs of and continue to develop all reporting team members through ongoing mentoring and training.

  • Reviews and approves requests for time off submitted by reporting team members ensuring coverage is provided for department.

  • Participates in the review and selection of potential new hire candidates for the team.

  • Prepares annual performance evaluations of reporting team members.

  • Enforces and ensures reporting team members’ compliance with GT policies; and provide appropriate and timely coaching and documentation for team members’ files.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assists with firm-wide integration programs to assist newly on-boarded firm administrative staff (LSS, AST, etc.) and lateral attorneys (Associates, Shareholders, etc.) with an introduction to department services.

  • Assists the department with a wide range of research and other requests as may be assigned.

  • Subject matter expert in legal conflicts policies, practices, and procedures related to conflicts of interests and ethical rules of professional conduct is required.

  • Ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of applicable laws, guidelines, regulations, ordinances, and policies.

  • Outstanding critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and organizational skills

  • Superior interpersonal skills including a strong focus on client relationship management.

  • Demonstrate a commitment to meet deadlines and a sense of urgency for achieving results.

  • Ability to continuously learn “on the job” and display flexibility to adapt to the needs of the firm.

  • Promotes ethical practices and compliance with legal standards relating to confidentiality, sensitive and proprietary information.

  • Exceptional technology skills with the ability to learn new software applications quickly. 

Qualifications & Prior Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Advanced degree or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school preferred.

  • Minimum of ten years of experience in a leadership or management role in conflicts, intake, or risk management within a law firm or legal environment is required.

  • Proficiency in Windows-based software and Microsoft Office Suite applications including Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook

  • Prior research experience utilizing Westlaw, Lexis, Intapp Open, SEC Edgar and Carta a plus.
