About the Department of Computer Science
Presently, the Department of Computer Science has seven continuing faculty members and two visiting positions. The Department’s computing resources consist of a set of computers to support faculty research and a Linux lab to support computer science and other related courses. Computer Science also shares with other departments a lab space consisting of Linux and Windows computers in support of teaching.
About the Position
The Systems Administrator is responsible for maintaining all computing resources used to support computer science courses and faculty research in computer science. The Administrator also supervises student employees.
Primary Responsibilities
- Purchase, configure, and install Linux operating system software on departmental computers for Computer Science teaching lab and faculty research labs
- Install and configure additional software as selected by faculty and lab instructors
- Supervise and assist in training of student system administrators
- Remain alert to status of teaching-lab computing system usability and well-being, e.g., total load on network-accessible machines, remaining storage capacity on file server
- Maintain and update shared documents describing administration procedures and computing system status
- Coordinate with Instructional & Information Technology Services (IITS) personnel on campus-wide computing systems such as internet access and security
- Coordinate with Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center (KINSC) Systems Administrator, as needed, on science-center systems such as user authentication
Line of Report: The Computer Science Systems Administrator reports to the Chair of the Department of Computer Science in coordination with the systems administrator for the KINSC.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree
- One year of experience with computing systems administration
Professional Competencies
- Proficient with Linux/Unix systems
- Experience managing user authentication
- Network/file management
- Security and dependability/reliability
- Development tools and general applications (e.g., browser, printing)
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with computing systems administration in a higher education setting
- Experience with servers used in research
- Programming and scripting experience
