Asana helps organizations orchestrate all their work, from daily tasks to strategic initiatives.
The Role

The People Team at Asana works to enable all Asanas to achieve our goals as a company in a way that is consistent with our values. We focus on recruiting, developing, and retaining exceptional talent from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that everyone can thrive, grow, and make a meaningful impact. Our work supports Asana’s broader mission: to help humanity thrive by enabling all teams to collaborate seamlessly and effectively.

As Head of Compensation you will lead the execution of Asana’s global compensation strategy, translating our compensation philosophy into operational programs and processes that support our business goals. Reporting to the Head of Total Rewards, you will manage a high-performing team and play a key role in scaling and evolving our compensation practices across base pay, equity, job architecture, and compliance. You will partner cross-functionally to ensure our programs are competitive, equitable, and aligned with our culture and talent strategy.

This is a critical leadership role that blends technical compensation expertise with team management, operational rigor, and strong cross-functional influence. You will help shape the future of compensation at Asana by driving excellence in program delivery while navigating organizational change.

This role is based in our San Francisco office with an office-centric hybrid schedule. Along with most Asanas, you’ll work from this office in person on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays and Fridays. If you're interviewing for this role, your Talent Acquisition Partner will share more about the in-office requirements.

What you’ll achieve

  • Lead the execution of Asana’s core compensation programs, including annual planning cycles, job architecture, global pay ranges, executive compensation and processes.
  • Operationalize our compensation philosophy across functions and geographies, ensuring consistency, compliance, and competitiveness.
  • Manage, mentor, and grow a team of 3 compensation professionals, fostering a collaborative and high-impact team culture.
  • Drive process improvements and scalable systems to support compensation operations as the company grows.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Head of Total Rewards, surfacing trends, gaps, and insights to inform future program design.
  • Partner closely with People Partners, Talent Acquisition, Finance, Legal, and senior leaders to support compensation decision-making and planning.
  • Translate complex compensation concepts and data into actionable insights and clear communication for business stakeholders.
  • Support design and communication of compensation-related changes and initiatives during periods of organizational change.

About you:

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in compensation, with 3+ years in people management roles.
  • Excited to innovate and evolve the compensation function in the age of AI.
  • Proven experience leading large difficult and complex projects or processes independently that have significant impact on function and company.
  • Experience preparing Compensation Committee materials, equity strategy and proxy statement prep for a US public company.
  • Experience conducting competitive market analysis, job matching, market pricing, and forecasting.
  • Advanced analytical skills with the ability to use data to drive decisions and influence stakeholders
  • Proven track record of partnership with leaders, managers, People Partners, Talent Acquisition and other cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced proficiency with Excel/Google Sheets.
  • Experience with Workday Advanced Compensation and market pricing tools.
  • Adept at balancing strategic priorities with operational execution.
  • Comfortable working through ambiguity and leading a team through change.
  • Demonstrated curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and leverage them to enhance productivity, collaboration, or decision-making.

At Asana, we're committed to building teams that include a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills, as this is critical to helping us achieve our mission. If you're interested in this role and don't meet every listed requirement, we still encourage you to apply.

What we’ll offer

Our comprehensive compensation package plays a big part in how we recognize you for the impact you have on our path to achieving our mission. We believe that compensation should be reflective of the value you create relative to the market value of your role. To ensure pay is fair and not impacted by biases, we're committed to looking at market value which is why we check ourselves and conduct a yearly pay equity audit.

For this role, the estimated base salary range is between $252,000 - $296,000. The actual base salary will vary based on various factors, including market and individual qualifications objectively assessed during the interview process. The listed range above is a guideline, and the base salary range for this role may be modified.

In addition to base salary, your compensation package may include additional components such as equity, sales incentive pay (for most sales roles), and benefits. If you're interviewing for this role, speak with your Talent Acquisition Partner to learn more about the total compensation and benefits for this role.
